NeedleWorkMonday - nTOPAZ D.I.Y. Contest Entry
This is my first time posting on the nTOPAZ frontend so I am hoping everything looks okay from the Steemit side as well. You know how we do it in the @needleworkmonday community, we love showing the process of our work. This is also a requirement to participate in the D.I.Y. contest.
I couldn’t figure out how to post descriptions alongside my photos so I decided to number them and explain what is taking place in each step. I hope you are able to follow along.
My daughter is a mini explorer and loves to go on pretend treasure hunts with her brothers. We purchased a compass to assist them in finding treasures. I decided to crochet a compass clutch for easy travel and to keep the compass protected. The following is a tutorial on how I made it...
Abbreviations:
ch = chain,
st = stitch,
sc = single crochet,
hdc = half double crochet,
sl st = slip stitch,
dec = decrease
The Clutch
1 . Ch 14. This is long enough to give a little extra room around the compass.
2 . Starting in second ch from hook, hdc all the way across. Ch 1 turn, hdc until you reach 16 rows.
3 . Fold your piece in half and sc around both sides and the bottom leaving the top part open.
Making the Strap
4 . Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 3 sts. Ch. 1 turn, sc in all 4 sts. Repeat until strap is desired length. Fasten off and tie in ends.
5 . Closeup of completed strap.
Making the Flap
6 . Connect a new piece of yarn right next to the strap and ch 1. Sc in same stitch and in next 10 sts. Ch 1 turn, sc in all 11 sts. Starting in the 3rd row, sc dec in the first and last stitches. Do this until you reach 6 rows. To make the button loop ch 5 and sl st into same stitch. Fasten off and tie in ends.
7 . Here is the finished flap with button loop. Sew on button.
The Hidden Pocket
8 . I decided to make a hidden pocket for treasure maps and secret scrolls. I made it a little smaller than the strap in width and hand sewed it on. It’s just a long strap of sc’s. Here’s a full view of compass clutch with hidden pocket.

Well I know nothing about topaz but now I'm going to have to check it out! The one thing that I can say is that you are an amazing mom! Not only do you make the childhood fun, but you insert a certain brand of Adventure and real life learning in the process. And well that all sounds easy and not a big deal, it is a big deal when you're raising children and trying to instill certain values and understandings in them.
Of course, as far as the compass bag goes, it is just another one in the long line projects that you have made look so easy and given such great direction that even a mere mortal could follow. So thank you very much and I absolutely love the idea and love the color. Thank you and the world thanks you for leading your young children in such an uplifting way.
