Drawing Jesus from Michelangelo’s Pieta Sculpture
Michelangelo sculpted the Rome Pieta when he was 24 years old, in 1499. Supposedly, this is the most famous sculpture in the world, and bears the signature of Michelangelo. The overall feeling from the sculpture is serenity, and the controlled emotion. It is as if either the dead Christ will wake up any moment, so we are waiting for this to happen, or that death is inevitable and we must find a way to cope with it without wasting a lot of energy. I like the way the drawing turned out and the feeling it creates. I think in future doing it at a larger scale will help add even more detail to the piece.
Hi everyone, sharing with you a recent pencil drawing I did of Jesus from Michelangelo’s Pieta found in Rome. I used pencil and some charcoal for the darker tones. It took several hours to do and was done on A5 paper.
I will share the process with you below.
Focus on getting the perspective lines in the right position/direction for the foundational drawing.
More details and tones added.
Finishing things off and using a rubber to add highlights.
Final piece.Original source

Thanks @axeman!
The drawing transmits peace and for me it feels like Jesus is really sleeping. Michelangelo is one of my favourite Artists, he is a real genius and I am glad that there are so many things he left for today's Artist to learn about.
Like the shadings, Ian, your drawing is really beautiful!
Thanks Stef, I also like Michelangelo's sculptures and have learnt a lot from him. :)
Gorgeous work!
Thanks :)

This is some seriously awesome work @iansart ! At first i thought it was the actual sculpture until i read and opened the post 😅. Seriously mind blown. I am actually currently working on something and its been at least 7 years since i last worked with perspective lines. I wanted to the define depth using vanishing points. In fact i worked on making a sketch on a paper today. Once it was done I looked at a canvas. I wanted to copy it to a canvas, so I made a grid and started transferring. Then i noticed i should just screw the grid and sketched it straight 😂.

Thanks! Yeah it good to use less grid and more sketching. :)
