Fear. It is fear of the "other" that drives xenophobia. It's economic fear, cultural purity fear, political dominance fear… fear of being made smaller and/or less relevant. It always comes down to fear and needing someone to put any face on those fears other than the one truly responsible – the one looking back from the mirror.
