Public Service Announcement: Watch Out For The Profitability Of Using @ocdb [Update: The Liquid Rewards Seem To Be Adjusting But Slowly]

The profitability of buying votes from @ocdb, the bid bot that allows whitelisted authors curated by @ocd to buy votes and thus grow faster, normally fluctuates between 10-15%. That is, when you bid X SBD, you'll get a vote worth 1.1X to 1.15X SBD in return. But wild price swings of STEEM and SBD may throw off the bot's calculations. Yesterday evening, I used the current maximum bid of 60 SBD on a post of mine entitled How To Market Steem + Another Shoutout To @coingecko and the author vote value from @ocdb seems to be 0.75*76.25 SBD = 57.188 SBD. I got a 69% vote from @ocdb. If these numbers are correct and won't change until payout, I will have lost just under 3 SBD by using the bot at this time.

I'm not reduced to a crying mess or anything over this as I've made profit to the north of 15% at other times. On the whole, using the bot has been quite profitable. It's not like using @ocdb is a losing proposition but one should be careful about the vote value it gives around times of aggressive STEEM price action. One way to protect yourself from losses is to check the comments @ocdb that it makes when it votes in the recent hours and take a look at the bid sizes and the vote values. I'd refrain from voting if the liquid rewards multiplied by two times 0.75 equals less than the bid.

Thank you fo your attention.

Good thing you noticed this as I was just about to use it!

I checked the bids and while doing it I think I also figured how to accurately determine if the bid brought net profit: after the received bid, the author rewards (0,75 x POST REWARDS) should be bigger than the AUTHOR REWARDS that would've been received without the ocdb vote + the bid amount.

Put into a formula it looks like this:

0.75 x POST REWARDS > ((POST REWARDS - ocdb vote value) x 0.75) + bid value)

where (POST REWARDS - ocdb vote value) x 0.75 determines the original AUTHOR REWARDS a user would've received without the ocdb vote.

So, if the above formula holds TRUE, then the bid brings net profit, but of course this is with the assumption that the numbers are static – which they aren't, they seem to be changing: the post you used as an example is now 78.07 (STU) on Steempeak interface which I think is equivalent to SBD.

I have always known that any form of vote selling can cause a loss, even though I have used them before, I have stopped using them for a while now.

@ocdb is no ordinary bid bot. It's a non-profit bot whose purpose is not promotion but help a subset Steem authors curated by @ocd to grow faster. It's not a business for the bot operators at all like every other bid bot in existence. I've never used any of the other bid bots because I've never had such important things to say that I would've been willing to pay money to get my post to Trending for the attention.

I won't stop using @ocdb because of making a loss in this case because I know it was fully unintentional on part of the bot operators.

Thanks @markkujantunen for good advice.
