Garden Update #2

A continuation from my first post where I showed the standing garden. These pics are a few weeks old, hard to get new ones with what seems to be daily rain here. This is my 43’ by 32” garden that runs along a fence line with my neighbor.

I started if a few years ago with just planning a now dead blue berry bush… thanks bunny foo foo, and a raspberry bush. This year we took over the whole thing and planted as much as I can. There are a few things that I don’t think I fully understand about gardening yet.

  • Spacing: Do I really need to space things so far apart? I swear I feel like I have a TON of wasted space. I want to get better at inter planting with stuff that won’t overshadow.
  • What does well where: Pretty simple, some things thrive, some don’t. Looks like I need to either plant stuff in another location, or try containers.

The long shot –

This give you an idea of what the length looks like. Having it long and narrow makes it easy to weed, but makes it a bit harder to cram what I want in there.

Section A

This is the Dwarf Raspberry bush that is still kicking, but not really exploding. Its seems to get more dwarf each year, and hasn’t really produced many berries. Not sure if I need more than one, or what the deal is.

Section B

Three rows of sugar peas - hoping for good production this year. Important lesson learned. I need to give wire on the inside of the fence for to grow on. If they use the single ply fence, Mr Bunny foo foo eats all it reach and is taking out a whole row…. This is one I am tempted to over plant, or at least inter plant with something I feel like there is much more room I can use here, but I don’t know how dense you can plant.

Section C

Three rows from top to bottom are beans, carrots and beans. I know my carrots are over planted and need to be thinned, but I haven’t gotten to it. Worst case is I get funky looking carrots. They will still taste fine!

Section D

Peppers – WTF peppers. They basically didn’t grow at all from the starter pack. They look ill and not happy. Not good considering my wife really wanted peppers this year. I guess I either need containers, or a new location, this one is clearly not working out.

Section E

Tomatoes!!! Now these things love this spot and have really taken off. They are getting bigger everyday and have lots of fruit growing.
You can see I have some carrots on both side of the tomatoes, might not have been my best idea since they are taking most of the sun, but at this point I will just let it run and see how it goes.

Section F

Greens – Back row is lettuce – I have cut it again and had a nice salad. Middle row is carrots, and the front row is my killer Dino Kale. I almost can’t eat it fast enough. I got 5 plants and I am cutting 4-5 leafs a day, and so far have only cut one back so far hoping for a second growth. Either way, I am planning more next year. Next year is daily salads and smoothies.

Off to the right, is where I planted potatoes, epically late, No idea if they will grow. Either way I got a 8 foot section that is open for next year to plant. I just need to figure out what else to plant that the fam will eat.

That’s all folks.

I have some herbs on deck I will show off next time. It felt like I planted a lot, but showing it here, now it doesn’t feel like very much. Funny how that works. I will have to remind my self when I am weeding next time that it is a small garden.

Grow on!! ~Senstless~

Our peppers did the same thing. I'm still getting some peppers but the bushes are tiny. Not sure what happened. Nice garden though.

Thanks! They were the one thing my wife really wanted. Hopefully we can figure it out for next year.

Ah, gardening is all about trial and error for sure... where the sun hits, what shades what, how close to plant. Have you ever heard about "square foot gardening"?... basically, things can be planted a lot closer than we think. Best wishes for a fruitful harvest.

Thank you!

I have heard of that book. I was supposed to read it over the winter but didn't get to it. I was also going to plan out my garden. Instead I just went to the nursery and started buying stuff. Good news is I know what will be good next year. Lettuce, kale and tomatoes are all doing wonderful.

We have been experimenting with the closeness of planting and are still working on it. We usually plant the various leafy greens closer together to reduce the weeding and are figuring out the best way to do things like beans.

As for the tomato and pepper plants, ours seem to do better if we put a few alfalfa pellets when transplanting them outside. You can get a 50 lb bag from various farm stores.

The leafy greens are definitely going closer next year. Considering the tomatoes are like 4 feet tall and loaded up It must be the soil condition for the peppers. I got pots for them next year.

Looking good man! Nothing tastes better than fresh food you grow yourself.

Man, these salads are killer with food I but 0min to 6 hours ago. I might have a bit too much, but I will give it a run to see how much I can eat. Not b uyong much for food beyond meat lately just trying to eat all my veggies. Not into canning yet.
