Mother of thousands

in #photograhy6 years ago (edited)

Some Kalanchoes have this amazing way of propagating. When the plant grows and leaves matures it start growing tiny little plantlets right on the edges on those leaves. Each leaf can produce maybe 20 new plants. Imagine the amount you get after each season ;) No wonder this plant is also called Mother of thousands (Official name is Kalanchoe daigremontiana)

I actually don't want that many. I had to remove the little shoots whenever they appear. They just bread like rabbits! Lovely, resilient plant, but come on.
Unless you are familiar with its properties and use it ;) Google it. It is almost like Aloe.

The bottom of those leaves is simply stunning!
And you can see a tiny bit of my balcony behind ;) Can you guess what plants are hiding behind?

Thank you.

Sort:

Plants behind must be cotyledon tomentosa (bears paw), adenium of some sort and the one on the left looks like kalanchoe oricula. :)

Yeyy! 2 of those 3 good.
That thing on the left is Sedum Spectabile :)
Poor Adeniums got root rots over wintertime and I had to chop them...

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)

Love these guys. I think we must have 10 species of them around the house. Got to be the easiest things in the world to propagate. Beautiful paterns on the leaves of this one.

They are pretty cool :D I have 5 types (not counting different colours of blossfeldiana).

Cool shots, love the info too. Plants well, nature in general is just amazing. Survive, adapt, continue on

Oh yes... this one is like a est almost. If I let the little things drop on post nearby they will take over everything! :D

My grandma used to grow kalanchoe plants in pots in her house. :)) She had aloe vera plants too, and she used both those plants for their healing properties.

Thank you for this nice reminder of my sweet grandma, @ewkaw!

Do you remember how she was using this one? I have aloe too, but it is so stinky that I don't use it. Just let it grow.

I think she used kalanchoe to make herbal tea for colds and sore throat. Not 100% sure though. And she put cut aloe leaves on burns and cuts.

Wonder if it's drinkable :p
The aloe I agree.. its good for sunburns too.

Oh yes, I used organic aloe vera last summer for that purpose after my neck and arms had got sunburned in South Korea. :))

That must be the mentioned Lobster :D

Hahaha :D :D

Nice pictures, interesting plant!

Thanks :) The plant is really cool.

Never knew about plants that multiply so fast - Mother of Thousands is a very appropriate name indeed! Aloe is something that I am planning to use for my skin(through an aloe product of course). Let me find out whether any products contain MOT. :-)

Like rabbits! I am telling you. One day you have one and 3 months later you have 300 :p
You can grow aloe and use the pure gel. Mixed with other ingredients for example.

Those types of kalanchoes are declared invader plants in my country. They are really bad

And I am not surprised. As soon as you turn around they spread those mini plants all over :p
