People shed their masks when they no longer feel vulnerable, they might be watched by those who can’t judge them or whose judgment doesn’t incur consequences so they don’t fake who they are.

Vulnerability might be a weakness they hide or a desire that can’t be fulfilled if they genuinly behaved. That is why they are belived to change when they reached power or made wealth while they no longer have a reason to put on a mask.
