Low Winter Sun

The days in the the dead of winter are short on these latitudes, currently we have all of 5 hours of daylight. While that is quite depressing most of the time, there is one good thing that comes with it for someone who is into photography; the low sun. These pictures are taken around noon, so that is pretty much as high as the sun gets above the horizon at this time of the year.

The low sun creates nice long shadows and soft light, with a golden hour that pretty much lasts all day. You can almost shoot both the sunrise and sunset on one go from one spot, without a wide angle lens or moving the camera.

Shot with the Nikon D7200 and Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8.

The last photo is amazing.

Thank you! Somehow everything aligned perfectly for me to capture it :)

So, the lake ice is strong enough to carry a person in your neck of the woods? Because you made this post, I must assume it was. :)

I'm pretty sure it is, judging from the footprints going over the lake, but I wasn't actually on the ice at any point today. I'm gonna wait a bit longer to be sure it's strong enough for both me and my camera :P

If someone were to draw a caricature of you, it should feature a little lady all dolled up and looking great lugging around a huge telescope. :)

Here I was just feeling bad because we are having cold temps today in Southern England and then I see your cold and snow. It is all relative I suppose.

The days are shorter here in Winter than back in New England, but I love the long shadows you get for photography. And for me sketching. I love shadows so it's really an artists dream and most photographs turn out lovely just do to the contrast in light.

These look so Beautiful, but I'm sort of 'snow shy' after my Winter last year when I stayed in New England and it was SO cold and So much snow...this year, however as I am not there, they are having a warm Winter. I'm beginning to think it is me that brings the cold. Mabye I've a bit of 'jack frost' in me?

It is all relative to the person, location and season :) But for me, I really like a good, snow filled, cold winter even if I get cold easily. I think it is the beauty of it all that makes it so good for me.

Almost every time I've visited England, it's been so damn cold because of the wind and moisture, down right depressing! I'd rather take the -15°C snow in here than +10 rain in London :P

What a light ! Like a dream, or a fairy tale !

Just like fairytale, but real life! :P

I see that, and so you make me want to visit Finland more and more ! You are much more efficient than any tourist office :D

While that low amount of sun sounds like depression for me, that extended golden hour bit is certainly a perk. So not much sky porn this time of year, too much clouds for gorgeous colors at sunset?

It's been very cloudy but usually on January and February we get some pretty good sunsets too when it's a cold and clear day, there is still hope!

I love the last photo. It's a very subtle sun halo.

I'm so happy you noticed the halo, I wasn't sure anyone would!

It's gorgeous! And i just burst out laughing at being able to shoot sunrise and sunset all from one spot and with little waiting and moving I'm not sure why but that cracks me up :)

It's quite tragicomic really :D
