Mayo Clinic Panorama (Original B&W Photography)

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

Howdy,

The Mayo Clinic is a world-famous medical facility and network. Rochester, MN, my hometown, is where the clinic was born and continues dominate the city. I was back in town and had an appointment, so I grabbed my camera and the 24-70mm lens (versatile) to grab a few photos from the top floor of the clinic's Mayo Building.

This is the main entry of the Mayo and Gonda buildings. In the foreground is a circular cul-de-sac, where patients can be dropped off and picked up. Just eyond, is a pedestrian street, which ends at a shopping center. The suspended tunnel is part of Rochester's Skyway, a system of enclosed foot bridges and hallways allows patients to navigate between buildings without venturing outside in the frigid Minnesota winters.

Not On Fire
This is, perhaps, Rochester's most recognizable structure: the Plummer Building. It houses a carillon, an instrument played much like a piano that sounds a system of bells, and is played by a professional carillon musician at noon. As you can see, the city has allowed Mayo to build larger buildings up around it. The Plummer Building was once visible from every direction outside the city center. The "smoke" in this photo is actually steam from a building below.

There is an abundance of art throughout Mayo Clinic's campus. Paintings, sculpture, etc. adorn the lobbies, waitingrooms, and long corridors. Many of these pieces of art are donations from wealthy patients and patrons.
Every floor of the Gonda building has a piece of glass art in a case, just beyond the elevators, making them the first thing a patient sees.

That plumber building is VERY photogenic, wow! Nice photos all around!
How did it go with your appointment?

Thanks! The appointment was just a procedural thing about DNA sequencing, so it was alright.

Jajajaj Lo has clavado 😉👍 😂😂😂😂😂 Lol lol lol

VERY impresssive photos @fotosdenada I've heard so much about the Mayo Clinic and it is wonderful to see it up close with great detail. I hope you are suitably proud of these images.

Thanks! These were all taken from the inside of the Gonda building looking out over the city. The inside is pretty fancy, too. Maybe one of these days, I'll take some interior photos.

That would be great @fotosdenada. I look forward to seeing interior photos.

I have never seen the campus in person before.

Was it hard to navigate?

I grew up in Rochester, so I'm pretty familiar with the main hub downtown and also the St. Marys campus, but it can be quite confusing for first-time visitors. Fortunately, there is very good signage. The main hub where I was, which consists of the Gonda, Mayo, and Eisenburg buildings, is all connected in a row and easy to navigate. When you need to find some of the less connected buildings, though, things get a bit trickier. There are buildings further away, too, like St Marys, which require a shuttle or a car to get to.

Rochester has been awarded a bunch of money for the DMC (Destination Medical Center) project. I can only hope that they will make things easier to navigate, but Rochester city government has been very much against spending money on public transportation. A light rail system would be hugely beneficial, especially as the city continues to grow and traffic gets worse. You get an idea of the traffic by looking behind the Plummer Building in that second photo.

Now, that is a thorough answer.

Yeah, I agree, a light rail sounds like it would be helpful.
