About fishermen
Do you remember, the other day I told you about a walk along the shore of the Gulf of Finland, and in the photographs you could see small lines on the ice, far away, near the horizon? These were lovers of ice fishing. They go out on the ice of the Gulf of Finland, drill holes and fish. We have quite a few such fishermen.
Yesterday morning there was a gale, the water level rose, a snowstorm broke out. The Ministry of Emergency Situations warned of wind intensification up to 17-22 meters per second. It was recommended to close the windows, put the cars in the garages, do not walk near the bridges, racks, power lines, do not go on the pond ice. The airport was closed due to strong wind and minimal visibility. The dam sections were also closed to protect Petersburg from possible flooding.
But the fishermen ignored the extreme weather warning. Ice on the Gulf broke. A very difficult rescue operation was carried out. Since the dam is closed, rescue boats could not approach the fishermen. Boats transported to the desired area by special equipment. 97 fishermen took off the floes. I think they will remember this fishing for a long time. But not sure that these fishermen will give up their hobby.

I'm happy they were rescued but wonder if they will be required to pay for the rescue operation? It seems with all the warnings like it was a foolish place to be!
Most likely, they will not pay. Similar incidents happen every year. And every year the need to pay for rescue operations by those who ignored the warnings is discussed. But it is very difficult to determine who went on the ice by chance, and who - intentionally ignored the warnings.
That would be hard to prove, wouldn't it? It must be a very costly rescue operation and put a lot of other people's lives at risk, though.
