Strawmen and Mongering

in #rant5 years ago

It's probably my fault honestly, but at times I can't help myself. You see social media is filled with people who hold strong opinions, but at the same time have not thought things completely through. I mean, the logical consistency is just not there, and when I encounter such opinionated folks, I can't help but to "attack" with ridiculous sarcasm.

I'm sure it does not help, and as a matter of fact it probably exacerbates the problem even more. I create a strawman position, something that should be refuted for its idiotic argument and more often times than not, my "victims" agree. Yes, I laugh and all, but if my intention was to add some sanity to the conversation, then I'm failing miserably.

With the uprise of characters like AOC, the fear mongering machine is in full gear these days, and I'm trying to set myself in the front row of the arguments. But listen, it's not that I am for a socialist government or anything, I think our government is too fat and inefficient to begin with, but to not know that we have a hybrid system already, with heavy social programs as part of the economy and fear that tomorrow we will become Cuba, is just ridiculous.

They are coming for your guns!!!

I've been hearing that all my life, it's not gonna happen, but it works wonders for selling you more guns.

Hilarious, but it shouldn't be.

Ha ha, yeah it’s best to avert your eyes. Walk away. Let them duke it out with someone else who falls victim to the “I just can’t not respond” temptation. Practice your eye roll! 🙄

I do the exact same thing! I hate it when people have strong opinions but haven't thought them through!

I have strong opinions about many things but I've researched them as deeply as I could, and, even if I did my own research I sometimes change those opinions after new facts are given to me... I've often heard that the people with the strongest opinions are usually the ones that don't know a single thing about the matter. In life one should have opinions but also question those same opinions, especially after given new facts and new information about the matter at hand.

Question other people but also question your own beliefs because this is the path that makes you evolve!

Nice post you have here

I think the best way to go is to hedge with the potential of extremes to happen but never commit to them being true. Knowledge is power and as they say, half the battle. But balance is survival which is human extinct.
