Spring is coming......Sailing!

In my neck of the woods, they say there are 2 seasons. Winter, and 2 months of bad sleddin' (slang for snow mobiling.) While this may be a gross exaggeration, by March, it feels like winter has been here long enough.

This makes me start thinking about summer stuff.

Sailing is the first one on my mind though I may post about some of my other favourite summer pastimes once a week til spring is finally here.

Looking forward to that first walk down the dock towards the boat. Gear and Beer over my shoulder, sounds of the rigging clanking off the masts, looking up at the trees to see what kind of wind we are going to have.

The season does start out a little chilly but not like it is now! Maybe a couple extra layers and perhaps some foulies (foul weather gear) and enough laughs to keep us warm.

Eventually the warmer weather is upon us and it is bright colours and fast shirts. Can't wait to fly that chute (spinnaker) downwind surfing the waves.

You KNOW the other guys are going to be stir crazy from the long winter and happy as hell to be back on the water. Jokes and stories and good times return with the sun.

AND of course there is going to be beer. Not that I need an excuse to have a cold one mid-week but I enjoy getting into some of the lighter session IPAs and searching out the crushable pints that are a little lower in alcohol but still strong on taste.

Have I met any new sailing enthusiasts here over the winter? What is your favourite part of summer?

Looks like you're having a whale of a time on the boats and can prepare for any sort of weather!
Just seeing those pictures gave me an itching to get out on the sea or our inland lakes would be more likely. I live in land locked Saskatchewan but I live in lake country.
I came real close to buying a catamaran a couple of years ago at an estate sale where they just wanted it to be gone for the family was grieving too much when ever they saw it. So close but those boats can be a lot of maintenance and not really worth it for the amount of time I'd get to use it.

That sounds like a great opportunity for sure.

Sounds like you have decided that you will have one at some point. Just have to evolve your life so that you have enough time to warrant it! Though your summer is likely as short as mine here in Ontario.

That's the thing - only 2 months of summer and with all the other stuff it hardly warrants buying a boat. just have to catch a sail with some buddies some time!

That’s what I do. Boat whore for life!

For you Zeke!

We've had this place in town for awhile now and every time I see it made me think of you so I couldn't help but share it with you. I too also have a restaurant here in town. It's called Theo's, and it is less than a block away from Pickleman's on the same street HA HA. Small world!

Great post too by the way. 12 years ago I lived on a sailboat down in Florida. It was my first attempt at trying to be off grid. My goal was to fix up my boat and sail around and maybe colonize my own private island but it never happened. Now I'm off grid living in the Ozarks.

Holy shit that just sounds awesome.

Boats can be so many things to so many people and for me it is just my Wednesday night (and sometimes weekends) sport.

Ahhh, you have reminded me how much I love sailing. Particularly in Caribbean waters where foulies aren't needed :)

Oh yah!

I have only ever been on the 70s America’s cup boats down there. I need some real racing in Caribbean waters

I love it how little things can make life so much more interesting and fun

You hit on a couple things I take very seriously when it comes to happiness. Living in the moment (pausing to relish those moments) and combining many cool things in each activity if you can. Sailing is activity that combines activity, outdoors, beer and fun!

This is what I call an adventure! Just with the guys with the waves, the ocean air and some beer. In this type of sailing do you get a chance to fish as well?

No fishing unfortunately. I am not sure you would want to eat what you caught in Lake Ontario but you sure could pull up some big ones.

Just racing and drinkin!

@zekepickleman, Spring is coming! Cheers, dood!

I sailed once from Spain to Morrocco, that was awesome! My dream is to sail from Europe to South America, maybe one day :)
