TPC – PRACTICE DAY 2 – PATRICK REED AND MARTIN LAIRD

in #sports6 years ago

Today was a quiet practice day on the front nine at TPC Sawgrass, as Tiger Woods played the back nine for today's practice day. However, we did get a visit from Patrick Reed, the 2018 Masters Champion, and we were all quite surprised when he decided to quit practicing after teeing off on Hole 6! Instead, he decided to pose for his fans, sign autographs (even though it was not a designated autograph area) and then step outside the ropes to chat with his wife! He does not have a reputation of being very friendly, but he certainly came across as very amiable at Hole 6 this afternoon!

Before I arrived for duty, for a while I watched fellow Scot Martin Laird on the green at Hole 16. It's always good to have some free time to watch a favorite player. Russell Knox another Scottish player will tee off from Tee #10 at 8:49am, so I hope to catch him somewhere on the course before I arrive for duty at 1pm!

Tomorrow will be a big day with the official start of the tournament and with Tiger Woods, Ricky Fowler and Phil Mickelson grouped to tee-off at 1:52pm from Tee #1, meaning that by about 2:45 they (and the crowds and the paparazzi) will be arriving at Tee #6! I won't be able to take pictures though, because I will be on duty. We rotate positions, so I'm not sure if I will be at the tee box, the landing area or the green when they arrive. No matter what, controlling the crowds is going to be a challenge tomorrow!

All images were photographed with my Phone 8 Plus.

Wow great post with photos @dmcamera

Yeah, I know Reed hadn't talked to his parents since like 2012. And his wife called officials to escort his parents out of a tourney his was in because it distracted him.

Cannot even imagine what that must be like for both sides
Can't wait to see that group with Tiger and see how they do tomorrow

I know. It’s a very sad situation. I can’t imagine that kind of family rift, especially in the public eye.

I was looking forward to seeing this post even though I don't have anything to do with golf. I love the photos you are posting. I love that very green grass and the beautiful blue sky, and of course the sport competition.
What is your duty more precisely, if you don't mind me asking. I'm just curious.
And I'm looking forward to the next one of course :)

I am what is called a marshal. My main duty is crowd control. We make sure that the fans stay behind the ropes and that they remain quiet when the golfer is addressing the ball ( about to hit it.) Until this year, we had to make sure that all cell phones were out of sight and no pictures taken during play and no texting was done in the area. That has all changed this year, thank God! We are behind the ropes with the players during play and if you happen to see golf on tv, you would see us with our hands up and also maybe holding a Quiet sign. Another duty is that one of the marshals is responsible fir watching the ball and signaling to the marshals at the landing area to show which direction the ball has gone. If it goes outside the ropes, marshals have to guard the ball and keep people away from it till the golfer gets there!

Thank you for these insights @dmcamera! That's a tough job but I can see the fun side of it as well. I have to watch some golf to get familiar with it :)

GReta shots I have to admit I dont follow golf so I dont recognize most of the player,s now if it was rugby I would LOL

I don’t follow it at other times either. Lol! I used to play golf 30 years ago, and was hopeless at it, but I do understand it. I don’t like to watch it on tv, but I like the atmosphere at the tournament and love chatting to all the different people before the golfer arrives at the Hole. Often they are the golfer’s family and friends. Our Hole stays pretty quiet until the big names come through.

Sounds like a fun thing to do :)
I played golf maybe 3 times, but that was social golf with Alcohol LOL

End of a crazy day! Chatted with some golfers’ Moms and friends today. The crowds were crazy when the big names came through.
