Get Over the Attachment and Dependence on Investors and the Rich

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Why are so many acting like corporate lackeys, sucking up to the corporate investor framework? Is that really what we want to create and imitate? Gotta do whatever we can to keep the money players and investors happy and keep their money invested in STEEM, right?

I get how many end up there. STEEM is your stake, in stake-based voting. The stake is a share, like a corporate structure.

If the investors can't just make easy money by exploiting the platform in any ways they can, then they will leave by taking their shares out. Can't have that, can we. We have to appease the shareholders and do whatever we can to make sure they don't sell their shares/stake. We have to keep bringing them profit by any means!

God forbid anyone should sell STEEM. Certainly not those who have lots of it. What a "bad" thing to have happen, for STEEM to be sold by those who have it. I guess the goal some people have in mind is for no one to sell any STEEM, hold it forever, and STEEM goes to the MOON! Great plan! LOL. Buyers need sellers... FYI.

It's not like it would be good to move away from the corporate-centered mindset of the world. No... It's not like we should try to free ourselves from that way of doing things. No... It's not like crypto was supposed to be different from that crap, and do things better. No... Let's just replicate the same money-centered focus and be corporate lackeys who do whatever and let whatever happen as long as it makes the investors more money. Wo0ot! Great plan²!

Let's not create the same structure many of us are trying to get away from empowering. Decentralizing the power that rests in few hands is good. If all someone cares about is making money anyway they can, and will leave if they can't, then so be it. They just care about making money, not the platform. We don't need to be dependent on them. We can shift our mindset to not be attached to keeping them here at any cost.

People get stuck in the past. When trying to figure out something completely unknown we project what we do know onto it. This is the Halo Effect at work.

The problem with blockchain and decentralization is that it's just so far out of the realm of everything we know that we falsely project the most foolish identities onto it.

Everyone likes to throw around catch phrases like hodl, decentralized, disruptive, and innovation, but the hard truth of the matter is that innovation and creativity are rare. Innovation and creativity are even exponentially more rare in an unknown space where nobody really knows what's going on. It's even worse that the foundation of the space is money and everyone is scrambling to stuff dollars in their pocket.

People are desperate. The vast majority of wealth created by new technology flows to the top of the pyramid, and the only way to get in on it is to become an early investor in a product that moons. It makes perfect sense that citizens would project the pyramid onto this flat architecture even though it doesn't belong there.

I've become very zen about all this. Greed doesn't matter. Regulation doesn't matter. Establishment money doesn't matter. The path to a new world doesn't change based on the paths of the old ways. Let the world run around as a headless chicken. All we need is time to build up the space.

We don't need their money to grow food, build houses, or pave roads. When projects like Open Source Ecology start to combine with 3D-printing and cryptocurrency people are going to realize that wow, the old money is totally antiquated. Unfortunately, we can't convince everyone based on speculation. We have to prove it, and that's going to take a decade or two.

It's even worse that the foundation of the space is money

Bingo. That makes this so much more prone to rule by money to drive everything. Anything for a token to turn into dollars.

The vast majority of wealth created by new technology flows to the top of the pyramid

It's exactly how it works. That's how I realized Steem works. It's a pyramid scheme of sorts lol. The rich just get richer, without doing any work.

Yes, imitating the old world is not going to get us the new world we want. I agree, it;s going to take decades to shift into a new paradigm of doing and living.

This obsession with revenue is frustrating. I was in the mindset that STInc and it's lackeys selling their stake is bad but now I think of it as a good thing. They are decreasing their stake while many others are increasing their stake. The balance of power is shifting, albeit slowly, but still better than nothing!

Exactly. That brings me to part 2, titled "Stop Looking at Selling STEEM as "Bad" for STEEM and Steem". I'll post it later ;)

Yeah it's only bad if the plankton and minnows are selling. We want them buying... we want decentralization.

I think a lot of us saw Steem and crypto in general as a way out- an alternative to the "corrupt legacy system." Now that it's emulating that same system of manipulation many are becoming disheartened. Steemit, although similar, is suffering from bad decisions from those at the top. As far as an investment goes- Steem is toast... I doubt it will ever see $2.00 again.

Yes many of us did. We were foolish :P

I didn't think it would go above $1 when it was at $0.07 either... the speculation money-magic gambling game is irrational and all belief based so who knows...lol.

Not me, that's for sure. Those at the top say that the last HF was supposed to democratize the platform more- this may be true, but what I'm hearing by others of us at the bottom of the food chain is that they all feel betrayed. If Steem is going to go back up it will have to come from new money and I just don't see that happening.

I'm pretty naïve about business development, but reaching out for the ad model... leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I thought STEEM was supposed to be different? There's no one here to advertise to anyways right now.

When I heard... ads on Steemit...I thought, here we go again. Just like everyone else. At least they are at the bottom and don’t really interfere with your experience :cough Youtube :cough That drives me crazy. When I am logged in, I don’t see any ads at all. Is that the same for you?

are they here now? I haven't noticed. I've been using Surfer 2.0.3 at home mostly from @esteemapp

They are located at the bottom of the comments. I only see them when I am not logged in, which is kind of odd but I am not complaining about that. Lol

Yeah, it sucks, but it doesn't bother me that much. The issues with plutocratic power does :/

About a year ago, the devs supposedly started a "marketing dept." I don't know what ever happened to it but I haven't seen any discernible growth.

The way I see it, until such a time as people can use crypto for everyday living expenses it will remain in the hands of the speculators. It will require an agreement among communities there is a value and treated as such independent of a fiat valuation.

The secondary problem I see is tied to an issue you mentioned not long ago regarding you are paying out of pocket to run your witness server. Just so much dependency at this time on external systems.

The only way to do that, is to get businesses to adopt it, right?

That seems to be the case, whether it be pre existing or new ones ready to serve a market waiting for them. The challenge as I see it then still remains for the businesses, which is why this void exists. Do they gamble that the crypto spent on their products (that they probably paid fiat for) will lose value and make their venture a loss. It keeps coming back to that scenario until a time that fiat loses the power of agreement to enough folks that it holds value independent of the fiat.

well written article, food for thought!
