RE: Steem separating the wallet from Steemit.com - Why this matters

in #steem5 years ago

One more reason to stop using Steemit... In normal use after the change some people need to login to two separate sites instead of one which means twice the possibility of security issues or bugs despite the team saying the code could be made more secure.

Sort:

Possibly, though their posting key is the only one being used on the social site which is more likely to be hacked of the two...

True... Mostly because the separation makes it easier for other sites to compete with the social part of Steemit. The alternatives still need the posting key. The problem is that they might not reject the other keys like the official site.

Yea, I think they were already competing with Steemit. You are right though, hopefully the other sites also reject other keys if the wallet has been separated out, otherwise what is the point. This wallet separation also likely paves the way for SMTs when/if they ever come.

Obviously some were already competing with Steemit, but they only had users who didn't care about the security impact of giving the master key (owner key) or one of the other keys to external sites or third-party applications. I've seen many people using for example Partiko even though its practices on inviting new users is quite questionable.

Yep, I have seen that as well.
