Shitposts vs Shortposts - Learn the Difference - Utilize the potential!

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

I've seen many people here post just to get hit by a curation trail, or by some other curation program they are involved in that requires a post to be upvoted. Or maybe it's not even that but, the need to post daily is so hard amongst some that it's pushing them into the downward spiral of posting half-baked thoughts or just straight up shiet.

This increasingly popular trend of shitposting is plaguing the fabric of the blockchain we are using.

The

two sentence posts. The one liners. The airdroppers. The stolen articles from Zerohedge or CoinTelegraph. The crypto market update. The @haejin "analysis". The lone image of your cat, foot, or whatever. Those are THE shitposts and their main characteristics are the lack of real value, or meaning behind the blocks of thext and their length. They are short. Most of them are straight up trash for many readers, hence the name shitposts.

On the other hand, there are outstanding short posts. They might resemble shitposts at first glance, because of their short length but, they are nowhere near being shitty. A line needs to be drawn in the sand so that we are able to recognize the good shortposts vs the shitposts. Sadly, that's something I can't do for you, becuse it's a mesure of ones perception of quality. What may be an interesting and funny story to me, might not interest you at all. Thus, you need to, on your own, decide if a shortpost is a shitpost, or not.

Don't get me wrong

I'm not hating on shitposts

Nor on users who create them. Shitposts are important. Mostly, to easily distinguish the ones who put in the effort in their thoughts and posts vs the ones who don't. People are people and not everyone can come up with amazingly well put together three page long posts so, we shouldn't think badly of those who can't. Quality is overrated and long posts aren't necessarily of good quality.

That said, shitposts are important because they are mostly short, 2 min reads. In an era where our attention span is less than 3 seconds, short posts serve an audience that doesn't have time to read the long posts. Some just love reading short posts and will never bother reading a 15 min read article. They will rather read the shitposts, just because they are short. No matter how bad, or ill-concieved they are, these people will read them. They don't have time or motivation to spend hours reading a long posts. They need to create their own content, don't have much time to spare. Thus, they enjoy the short posts, most of which end up being shitposts.

What I'm trying to say is that

There will always be an audience for short posts. A much smaller one for shitposts though, but a much larger one for good, short posts. Over time, as our attention span and motivation to read long articles decreases further, the audience for short posts might become larger than for the long posts. Learn the difference between a shitpost and a shortpost and utilize the potential of short articles. Don't just post a single image without any meaning or context added in the description. Spice it up, concept your thoughts better and work on ways of presenting them to your readers.

With a sharp blade, deeply engrave the message of your post into your neatly aligned strings of letters.

A good shortpost,

not a shitpost

can be much more valuable than a badly written long one. It can be very well put together and thought provoking. Instead of explaining the situation in great detail a good short post will intrigue the reader to want to discover more on their own, or to come by the authors blog again. For another fix of the short read goodness! It's like a drug. If satisfying enough, users will keep coming back for more. Put more thought/time/effort into your articles and the shitposts you used to write will turn into crack.

Don't shitpost, shortpost instead.

People with large SP holdings need to post every day to take full advantage of the stake they have built up or paid for. You can't really blame them for shit posting when they will get the same level of reward whether they post a one-liner question such as "How are you feeling today?" or spend some time writing something more meaningful. It's their stake and they would be stupid to sacrifice a daily payment simply because they had nothing meaningful to say. The system itself encourages shit posts and for someone who holds say 500,000 SP it would be foolish for them to not post something at least once a day and upvote themselves. I agree with your points in principle but in reality, a lot of people on here post every day simply because if they don't they lose money. If I earned $50-100 a post by upvoting myself while still curating I would be posting one line shit posts at least 3 times a week simply because my life isn't interesting enough and I don't have the skills/drive to post something decent every day.

They don't. They can always delegate to bidbots to reap the benefits of their SP without posting. That said, I'm not to any extent blaming users for shitposting.

I completely agree with what you said here

The system itself encourages shit posts and for someone who holds say 500,000 SP it would be foolish for them to not post something at least once a day and upvote themselves.

But this is and will keep on changing with projects like @steem-ua, @curie other curation programs who upvote based on "quality"

In figuring out what I like on Steem and what I like to do on Steem I’m coming to the same conclusion but you summed it up real good 💩

hey @Runicar, great post ;) btw are you still hosting the photochain contest? And did you receive my message on discord with my wallet for pht distribution? thx

Thanks @tobeda; The contest is currently on hold until I get a reply from the Photochain team. I have received your message a long time ago but haven't gotten any new ones.

okay great, so that means I am all set up :)

I do a lot of short/shitposting as I do not have time for crafting anything better right now.

And there is nothing wrong with that, even I do it myself sometimes when I really don't have the time but still want to post something that day.

I honestly love your article.
To be more exactly I love the spirit of your article. The most amazing thing on steem is obviously the possibility to make money with your own content. Sadly it automatically encourages people to find a way to make the system work in their purpose. Do you see the old scammy song of getting rich without much "real" work?
I personally dream from a platform, which encourages only high quality and original content, although this is realisticallyspeaking nearly impossible.
