My dear fellow Steemian, you were so right when you said,

investing, doesn't mean just money, you can invest your efforts, time and energy...

Although it's not always all what we have to invest or at least not the only parameters that would determine our success or not, engagement with other community members for sure is one of the most significant ones that may not only influence but even change our entire future path.
