Pretty much similar to Automattic operating wordpress.com, the commercial platform built on the open source wordpress.org software. While Matt just happens to be the creator of WordPress (by forking b2), he’s to most first and foremost the WordPress guy, not the Automattic dude.

Yet, his day to day active influence on wordpress.org is as small as Vitalik keeps repeating his is on ETH. But you bet it makes a difference when promoting WordPress.com VIP. That works better than promoting say BestProBlogHostingPlatform.com.
