Why don't people comment more on steemit?
Lucrative in what way exactly? If it's about money then Steem is a waste of your time. Unless you live in a third world country, a few cents here and there in upvotes are not going to make much difference to your financial situation.
The reason those posts get lots of upvotes and not much comments is because it's not real. It's called upvote bots, look it up on google if you want to know the details. The upvotes are paid by "the article writer" (or shitposter) itself.
It surprises me how much people don't know this is actually a thing. And naively wish/believe their content will be discovered some day without paying their way to the trending page. Not gonna happen.
But you can also ask yourself, how is a cirkel jerking, communist system like this supposed to work in the first place? How do you think that upvotes are financed? The community ends up paying the bill by inflation.
When Steem was created they thought people wouldn't abuse a system like that. It doesn't work out that way. Everything that can be abused will be abused, especially if it's as easy like sending some payments to bots.
So the system is broken. Instead of solving it "abuse fighters" are flagging small users to death for "abuse" while leaving whale "abusers" alone.
How corrupt can you be? Then people wonder, why is Steem declining? Why do you think? This place has been corrupt since it's started it's existence with the ninja mine. The only reason people stay around is lack of a good alternative.
But institutional investors don't like fraud. "He who can't be named" and other whales don't seem to understand that.
Actually I feel that there are many comments on post.
But you need to have engaging content. And you need to work on your followers.

I think comments and engagement can be gotten through communities of that sort otherwise you have to pay for it somehow.
Communities here might include dPoll, Steemhunt and others.
You're absolutely right with this. I live in a third world country and posting on Steem is something one can consider for a full time job but I have noticed it isn't worth it for most people in the develop countries.

@Niel96 I meant lucrative more relatively. Ie., most of my rewards have come from writing comments as opposed to authoring blog posts - not a lot of followers yet.
Some of the posts that I've come across are amazing but they have zero conversation after. I didn't realize that so many votes could be from bots...

Horseshit statement.
You can only stop the bigger guys by having more SP than they do. Not only that, but by a wide margin. Think about that for a second.
You ain't making a statement by landing a tiny downvote on them. They will laugh it off and make sure you can't stop other "abusers" while they still make out like bandits.
Not being able to zero them out means you will never stop them. Did you know @spaminator has been flagging two whale alts for ages and it did nothing because they are spamming thousands of comments a day at 0.10 a piece?
There is a point they become pretty much unstoppable. In fact, once you have over 500K SP, there's not much anyone can efficiently do short of dropping STINC's 32M SP on you.
When bernie was spamming like death few weeks ago why was nobody doing a thing about it? I don't believe that nobody wouldn't have noticed it.
Not that i don't get it, it's the same like a suicide mission. Nobody wants to end up like fulltimegeek. But it's like the DEA equivalent of busting a few small time pot dealers for a few grams while leaving pablo escobar alone because he got a good army.

The real problem is bit bot abuse. But it's like cooling a hot plate down with a few drips of water. Because the system is faulty at it's core. As long as there are voting bots people are going to abuse them, it's to easy not to. My point is: proof of brain failed. There are better ways to curate content.
The problem is that steem only takes upvotes into account to rank content, that doesn't make any sense. Because we all know that upvotes are not an indication of good content. What they should do is rank content on different factors. How long is the content, how much engagement is there, how is the reputation of the author, how much is the post shared, ...
Steemit is pretty much thumb when it comes to ranking content. Youtube is much better in this, you can spend 6 hours on youtube without even noticing it because you get showed all the things you are interested in. The algorithm is very good in figuring out in what people want to see.
That's a front end issue. I don't even use Steemit to browse these days. They are able to gather those metrics, if they don't want to implement them, that's their problem.

Usually that's not how business works, you can't just print money and give it away to the community. As long as the growth is bigger than the inflation it's not a problem but this is not something sustainable.
How is this any different from what central banks are doing with their QE? This is even worse because the whole business model of Steem is just printing money.
I'm not saying it will fail but it's not really a free lunch, you have to fight off the inflation.
A system like this is also easy to abuse.
What's the difference between that and the various forks in crypto for quick cash? It's not just a Steem problem. lol
Have a few more dickheads like CSW and your top 10 will be filled with random BTC clones with at least 21M tokens a piece.
When any form of money/currency is involved then someone will abuse that system.
As for comments, that comes down to allot of factors. What I found works for me is one needs to find a niche and be consistent with posting and one could potentially see a decent amount of comments.
It depends on where you hang out on steemit, if you find the right community for your interest there can be a fair bit of engagement on your various posts which can be a lot of fun.
Those who don't really care about engagement are simply post-mining for rewards
@niel96, In my opinion no place in this world free from the flaws and one more truth is there and that is, at one place we see both type of individuals Good and Bad. Now we can see great changes on Steem Blockchain.

Maybe, it is because people here on Steem think more about that it is work than on other social media platforms because of the cryptocurrency they get.
I always upvote legit commenters in my posts with at least a vote that is higher than the dust limit so they actually get something and it works, people are actually writing some comments.
I personally not do that much of commenting people because it is time consuming, sometimes, I'll do dpoll, since it is fast and fun. :3
I thought people still get quite a lot of comments especially from memos I think.
