Do Dust Votes Count for the Author When Combined With Other Dust Votes?

in #steemit6 years ago

I've been reading recently that when your upvote is worth less than 0.02c you may as well not vote at all because your vote will end up turning to dust and not even count.

Then I just read before (on a post that is three months old though) that you should vote even if your vote is worth a piddling amount because they accumulate if other low voters vote too - so if, say, five low votes are given to a post they will be lumped together as one, and so then they will count.

Does anyone know if this is true?

It's one of the more irritating aspects about being a beginner here that I really want to give my uptick to good content but at the same time I feel like if I do I will be giving a false idea to someone whose payout ends up being lower than they thought it might be.

I know we're talking literal pennies but (a) people need all the encouragement they can get when they're starting out on here and (b) it's annoying that it takes so long as a beginner for your vote to even marginally count.

If tiny low votes do count when they're lumped together, that would be a far fairer way for this system to work (and is what I was pondering myself a few days ago as I was doing something mundane like wiping down a countertop or shower-daydreaming or something. This place really gets under your skin after a while, doesn't it!)

Hi! I'm a bot, and this answer was posted automatically. Check this post out for more information.

Oh, bugger off.

Love it! WTF is that bot all about?

It's stupid. I don't want shitty sideshow carnival bots thanks very much.

I'd love to know the answer too and don't feel confident enough to respond. I think even if you vote and it's not much (or virtually nothing) it's still encouraging to get an upvote, don't you think? But then, if it's less than .03 it's not worth anything and you're right about that being unfair. There are a lot of flaws to this system and it will be interesting to know what this 'hard fork' will bring, whatever the hell that is lol.

Yeah, this is the struggle - it's so nice a feeling to upvote but it's not so nice to think it means nothing really except encouragement.

I'm probably overthinking it though. In the end, the encouragement is worth more for newbies than a few cents.

Yeah love all that new terminology to learn - hard forks :) Looking forward to see what the changes bring too ... just when I'm starting to sort everything out, hehe

Hi Sue, there are two aspects to this and dust is technically not the $0.02 talked about here.

The concept of dust votes was introduced to avoid users spamming a huge amount of small votes. A dust vote is equal to a 100% vote of a 1 SP account. As the Steemit interface isn't allowing you to change the voting bar until you have 500SP in your account, this should rarely happen for normal accounts. A dust vote will throw an error, so it won't add up with other votes.

In addition to this, there is a Minimum payout threshold, which is set to $0.02. This is something impacting many users as upvote values of $0.01 etc, will be changed to $0.0 on payout day. This is often referred to as Dust, but technically it is not... ;)

The dust threshold will be changed in HF20, but I have seen nothing about the minimum payout threshold.
