The film that I want to review is Dunkirk by director Christopher Nolan. The film was nominated for 8 academy awards and won 3. Best Sound, Best film editing, Best Sound Mixing.

Brief History

The story is based on factual events after the allied troops were surrounded after the battle of France in 1940 during world war II. The only way of escape from the beach was by sea. There was estimated to be around 400,000 troops trapped on the beach under heavy fire from German dive bomber aircraft picking them off like fish in a barrel. And the British navy ships were too slow to escape the barrage of fire and many were blown up. The British launched the largest evacuation of all time by calling on every boat on the island of Great Britain to sail to Dunkirk to rescue its soldiers. 338,326 troops escaped on board 826 vessels in which 246 were sunk.

The Storyline

Review

This is a film where you hold your breath from start to finish. It is just straight in to the thick of the action. And it is not pretty. It is war and Christopher Nolan is excellent at capturing this. The only break we get is the switch between story lines. The British man sailing across the English channel is somewhat of an escape from the dread and despair of the troops on the beach and in the sinking boats. The fighter pilot story is excellent and it shows the bravery of the RAF pilots during the war. Noone at the cinema wanted to be there, that's for sure. No wonder the film won best sound at the oscars . It was the most amazing soundtrack. There is a ticking sound all the way through the film which at first I found a bit strange but it really ties into the film especially near the finish. The battle for survival on the beach made me put some of my first world problems into perspective. It was just awful and when it cuts to the jolly little boats coming to rescue these troops who are shellshocked from war is such a stark contrast. Most of these part time sailors didn't know what they were really letting themselves for. When the civilian boats started approaching the devastation was starting to be seen by the jolly women and men who wanted to be help. They were offering tea like any good British person but I was shouting at the screen ,
Get them on board you fools before the next barriage of bombs.
I was just an amzing story and it really hits home the community patriotism of a whole country to rescue its own. This was the turning point of the war. If these troops were not rescued then Germany would of won the war.
I couldn't wait for this film and I was not disappointed. I love Christopher Nolan as a director anyway and then he goes off and does Dunkirk.

The only downfall of the film was it's trailer that was nearly as famous as the film itself. Can you see anything odd in this trailer? Oh and by the way. The ticking sound I am talking about is in the trailer.

So did you spot him? The smiling extra just happy to be on set? Yeah that kind of pissed me off that he wasn't spotted and left on the cutting room floor but he managed to stay in and even make the first official trailer. This is one of the most intense films you will ever watch so it is not for everyone but I really enjoyed it and I am going to watch it again tonight. Excellent film with an excellent cast.

I love my war movies and I must admit it wasn't great and was disappointed. There was no action and came across as very low budget. Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan knock this one to shreds. Not being harsh but this one could have gone straight to DVD and missed the cinema.

Totally disagree. I thought it was intense . Band of brothers is the best by a mile and private Ryan’s first twenty minutes were epic but went downhill after that. There was loads of action ! 😂😂😂. There wasn’t no hero but you can’t say there wasn’t stuff going on .

sir blanchy! so now you're also a movie critic? lol. hey but I heard such great reviews about this one from one of my favorite critics that I've always wanted to see it.
The critic said that it has one of the best dogfight scenes every filmed? I think that's what he said. anyway I need to see this one.

Yeah it was brilliant . I watched it again because the first time I didn’t really know what was going on . The planes had nothing . There was more tech on my first mobile phone .

sir blanchy! the planes had nothing? as far as technology? of course but I was told the dogfights were brilliantly filmed unless I'm thinking about some other movie. don't get smart on me and don't make me come over there!
