Do I move or take me a dog?

Dear Stackers,

Years ago I already prepared for early retirement. My focus was on financial independance, protect myself against future inflation with gold/silver and ensuring I had some hobbies and studies to keep me busy most of the week.

But I overlooked something

Now with a year and a half in retirement I notice how quiet the (isolated) village I live in is. We have zero shops, a tennis court empty most of the time, some restaurants and an elementary school with hardly enough children. Most couples both work during the day.

Did I not notice this before ?

Yes of course, but with both me and my girlfriend having busy jobs for the last twenty years we always appreciated the quietness at the end of a workday. During the weekend we had our activities.

As my girlfriend takes the car to work now I feel I am a bit stuck here most of the time. Getting out of the village requires walking 15 minutes to the trainstation where a train stops every half hour.

Utrecht city

I often go to Utrecht which is my place of birth, a University town with a rich medieval history. This town with 350.000 people of which 35.000 students is bustling with life.

So what now?

We talked about it and we may move to Utrecht in the nearby future. I may have to wait some 5 years but luckily it is discussable. At this moment the prices of houses in Utrecht are higher than on the country side which was not the case some 25 years ago. But with historic cities being more popular than ever prices skyrocketed the last few years.

In the mean time I may get me a dog or so? The Rhodesian ridgeback for instance.

Getting a dog is never a bad idea, helps you with the exercise and get away from the computer to breath some fresh air. We feed stray cats at night in Dubai, gets us out for a daily walk as the little kittens depend on at least one meal a day.

This does not sound like a problem to me.
First, if you need to go, then you can have a pleasant 15 minute walk to the train station. Walk, Ride, Relax.
Second, if your girlfriend is also close to retirement, then in a short time she won't be leaving with the car and you can continue to enjoy the days together and the quiet evenings together. That is unless the girlfriend is much, much younger which may mean you need the rest during the day.
Third, getting another car is easier than getting a different house.

Just some thoughts . . . good luck with your dilemma.

Yeah sometimes there are those things that we know but the never come into our focus. When the finally do, it is kind of surprises us. Although I am far from retirement but this thing where something suddenly comes into focus have snuck on me before.

As for property I am a bear. If it turns a profit I am just willing to sell it as long as another viable option for living is available to me.
