Buying mesembs and hitchhikers

in #succulents6 years ago (edited)

Today I bought some new plants, and hopefully extras. I'll show the mesemb in this post.

faucaria tuberculosa.jpg

Faucaria tuberculosa, similar to the one I bought at the show that rotted on me almost immediately. This one is a monstrous cultivar: the misshapen warty lumps on the leaves are the result of breeding. If you look closely at the base of the plant, you will see 3 little seedlings. They could be weeds, but they also look a lot like freshly germinated mesemb seeds. Time will tell.

I bought this Adromischus cristatus var. zeyheri or Crinkle leaf plant a while ago and realised one day that there was a mesemb seed that had germinated in the pot. It now has it's second set of leaves after the seed leaves showing although it is still too early to say what it might be. It is visible at the lower side of the pot

Some other plants that I bought as extras in the pot on previous occasions. They were tiny at the time and took a while to get bigger:

Anacampseros, a really cute little fluffball

It pays to check your pots when you buy them and not to pull up everything that grows until you are sure of what it is, you can acquire interesting plants that way

More plants!
I have Adromischus cooperi. And almost killed it with my compulsive watering disorder :p Took lots of leaves in case the plant will die. It survived. And the leaves too. Now I have about 10 of them :p

Adromischus are pretty tough. I hope you have friends and family who like succulent, too. You can give them as gifts then ;)

Not really. Only I am that crazy :p
I gave them some and I think they killed them by now

Yes, that is what normally happens :(

hehehe two for the price of one.
I like the little fluffball. Is that how they grow? It looks like a spider has gotten to it and made it into its home.

Yes, some of them are furry like that. The hairs act both as sunscreen and an insulation against water loss. Water vapour that is released when the stomata open at night stays close to the plant instead of evaporating and the higher relative humidity prevents large amounts of water loss. It's also good camouflage and protection against insects eating it

Now that is what you call a smart plant. So many functions with huge benefits. It would also serve as a protection from people who are scared of spiders and don't know much about plants. Like me heheheh. Though I wouldn't go poking it in the first place anyways.

:-)

It's amazing how nature has thought it all out and gives plants a chance to survive!

I love Anacampseros and Faucarias and Adromischus . I have even sow some species of them. What is most adorable to me, here from your post, is that last Anacampseros. And in just a couple of years it will look completely irresistible.

I'm sure it will. When I found this Cheirodopsis at the show, I was very pleased to see what was in the corner of the pot

:)
I know that feeling!
Wonderful!
It is like some secret gift.
Precious being brought by luck.

I love the Anacampseros, its got spunk, you should name it cousin Itt, after that character off the Addams Family.

maybe I will!

I never thought that there is such a variety of similar flowers. I see that you are a great specialist in the cultivation of a variety of flowers

In our climate, there is a very wide range of plants and most of them are succulent in some way, in order to survive the heat and low rainfall.
I am not that much of a specialist, there are many that I don't know.

I have a Faucaria Tuberculosa,
I really like this plant,
because it does not need a lot of water and grows quickly!

I am a big fan of the Faucarias

I will try to find others, not easy here!

Really? France seems to have a large succulent community. I'm sure that you will find some with a little digging. Good luck!

Yes, I have to take the time to search right now I'm mostly on cactus and Hoya!

I like the bottom one covered in cobwebs.

Seems to be a universal favourite!

fluffball is so interesting

They look like they're from another planet!

That's precisely why I like them

I never seen before this plant. It looks nice. I feel happy to see it.
