Lets Swing on the Pawhuska Swinging Bridge - DTube Video!

in #swinging5 years ago (edited)

You may know about Pawhuska, Oklahoma, because of the famous Pioneer Woman, but did you know there is so much more to the town than just her Mercantile and Lodge? There is so much amazing history in that place. Osage County is the place where the Osage Nation purchased land and became the richest Native American Community in the United States. It is also here you will find one of the few swinging bridges in Oklahoma.

Made in 1926, this was the sole crossing of Bird Creek when the water was high except for the one car bridge and reservoir crossing at opposite ends of the town. J.M Buckley, a city engineer, designed this structure and then directed the construction. It is built with two large steel A-frame towers, one at each end, metal cord, rope, and wood planks. It sits 30-feet above the river when the river is at its lowest.

Scott and I decided we were going to go check this landmark out since we were doing all things Osage County. We had just been hanging out in the downtown area and needed to have some fun. Upon first driving up to the structure, it looked a bit foreboding, but as we walked across it the first time we find there was nothing to fear. It was structurally safe and wasn't dangerous at all. Granted, it was extremely bouncy, but not terrifying.

If you are ever in the Pawhuska, Oklahoma, area, you really should stop at the Swinging Bridge just three blocks from the main area. It is literally south on Main street just blocks away from the Pioneer Woman's Mercantile. You will find yourself laughing all the way across.

This is pretty cool, we like places like this, though it would scare me. I totally used to read the pioneer woman blog back when Ree wasn't really famous. When she started the lodge I quit reading, go figure.

It was an amazing adventure. I worried that I would chicken out, but it was great.

And thank you for noticing 😋 never been to that bridge, looks pretty awesome! They have a few here that go over the cumberland river by Burgess Falls that are really neat.

hahahaha oh my gosh - i was thinking the same thing as you were while i was watching!

the plank was NUTS - reminded me of Raider of the Lost Ark or something ahahahahaha
and how in the world was he walking without bouncing! LOLOL I think it would probably be not so scary too - UNLESS that netting was lower LOL - then i'd be scared!!!

and Scott's wiggle was the cutest thing ever! LOL

I watched a newscast about the bridge and one time the fencing was only three feet high! I'm not sure i would have crossed it. This was really nothing since the fencing was so tall. I can definitely tell you there were no brilliant professors around and it wasn't scary at all. Now, take out some of the planks, yeah. Haha.

Yes, that wiggle was awesome! He does thes little things that are silly and its so hard to catch them on video; so when I get the opportunity, i grab it. Still trying to get him dancing.
