SteemQuest (Sign/Up) Day 1 Character Creation

in #tabletop-rpg6 years ago (edited)

Welcome everyone to the 1st SteemQuest Character Creation. Below I have copy/pasted the basic rule book that I have so far. In future posts I will have a link.
I will be constantly improving and updating as we play. I will mark the updated sections every post so they are easier to locate.
As I want this game to become part of the community here feel free to suggest things to add / improve. I really want the game to become something you enjoy.

This is going to be a basic Alpha version of SteemQuest as we play I will be adding content that expands the abilities, that players can assign to their characters.

SteemQuest: A fantasy RPG boardgame on the Steem Blockchain

Character Creation
A player may chooses one of the following races HUMAN, ELF or DWARF

Each race has 4 attributes (they are given 10 skills points at level 1 to assign to the 4 traits below)

Strength - this allows a player to equip things
Mind - this creates a players mana pool and allows a player to read runes
Personality - this is how good a player is in interacting with other life forms
Attack - base number or less needed to hit an enemy (we roll a D20 for combat so if you have an attack of 5, you must roll a 5 or less on the D20 to hit) this starts at 10

The next 3 stats round out the players character.
Absorption - amount of damage your armor, shields, body can absorb per turn before losing hearts
Hearts - A players health is represented as Hearts. You can take damage in 1/4 heart increments. Each player starts with 4 hearts and they increase by 1D6 quarter hearts per level
Mana - A player has a mana pool that is used for many different Magic things. The mana pool is equal to the mind trait.

All players start at level 1 with 1 skill point. They gain 1 skill point & 1 attribute point per level.

Experience (EXP) - this determines your players level. Players are awarded exp for all types of activities from combat, trading, crafting, etc....

For our game we are using a doubling level system. Lvl 2 is 40 xp, Lvl 3 is 80, Lvl 4 is 160 etc...

Skills

This is where you can really customize your character. Any character can take any skill. All General Skills cost 1 skill point to unlock. To start we are only using general skills as we play new skill trees will be released.

General skills

Fireblast (1 mana, 1 action) Range 3
Fireball 2x2(1 mana, 2 actions) Range - LOS
Lightning bolt (3 mana 4 actions) Range - LOS
Freeze surface 3x3 ( 1 mana 1 action) Range 3
Dual wield - always on
Pass through rock - (3 mana, 4 actions) - can pass through a 1 square thick wall.
Swing through - always on
Lock pick - (2 actions)
Pickpockets (1 action)
Bashing board - always on [player can attack with shield]
Heal (1 mana 1 action) Heal 1D6 quarter hearts
Dead-eye - 2 actions [able to attack any enemy in line of sight even if blocked, so if ten goblins are rushing you, you can target the shaman in the back of the room] +3 to hit

Is there Anything I can do that is not defined in the rules......
Yes you can! The game master will set the requirements. Just let him know what you are attempting.
It’s role playing you can do anything you want (unless your questing than their are board game limits)

I am open to any other skills you would like to have. I am trying to increase the list. Let me know if you have an idea and we can work it out.

The game has 2 parts initially. The 1st part is done in town, at this time the players are under contract to the lord of the town. So they can only be in town or Questing. (This will be expanded later)
So in town gameplay is normal tabletop-rpg the players can interact with each other and Npc’s in the buildings.

The current buildings are Marketplace, Blacksmith, Church, Tavern, players can help build out the town during the tabletop-rpg phase of gameplay.

The 2nd part of the game is Questing. Questing is done on board game maps and plays as follows:

Turns
SteemQuest is a turn based game played on a game board of squares. A player gets 4 actions per turn.
Moving, attacking, searching, disarming, equipping are all 1 action. Skills take a different number of actions, they are listed in the skill’s definition.

You can either complete the quest or if you are stuck you can back track and leave.

Resting: players may rest on any square within the quest. All players roll a D20 if all the numbers are odd the players rest successfully, otherwise they encounter a wandering monster. Resting restores all ♥️ & Mana.

Searching
A player may spend an action to search any square while questing. A player may uncover hidden traps, hidden doors, treasure or items.

Items (players start with 2 of the following items)

Small shield - 1/4 heart absorption. STR 1
Leather armor - 1 heart absorption STR 2
Wizard robes - 1/2 heart absorption. STR 1
Wizard School Ring - 1/2 heart absorption STR 1
Staff - Damage 1/2 heart. STR 1
Long sword - Damage 1 heart STR 4
Short Bow - Damage 1/2 heart STR 2 Range 3
Long Bow - Damage 1/2 heart STR 3 Range 4
Mace - Damage 1/2 heart STR 1

Currency
Many different things can be used as currency. The primary coin is SteemCoins, everyone will accept these. Each player starts with 5.
Food, gems, items can also be used to barter with.

For this 1st scenario the players are in service to the Elven Lord Darkcloak. They are encouraged to create back stories . Once enough Quests are completed they will be released from service and then are able to explore the world.

Please reply to this post with your character and introduce yourself to your fellow adventurers. Also please pick one of the avatars in the picture for this post that you like.

Thank you for being part of this. I don’t normally ask but if you could please resteem this post, that would be awesome. I would love to get a few more players.

Thank you for your support

Can I suggest some pre-built characters to reduce the barrier to entry into this game?

Dwarf:

Strength: 8
Mind: 1
Personality: 1
Attack: 10
Absorption: 1 heart (leather armour)
Hearts: 8
Mana: 2

Gear:

  • Mace (until I can find an dwarven axe)
  • Leather armour

Skills:

  • Lock Pick

Apologies if I got any of this wrong. Basically I want a headstrong grumpy tough dwarf that has no patience for magic, elves, humans, monsters or anything that isn't food, beer, beards and gear.

Pre-built characters is a good idea.

Lorelei, the acolyte of the forest.
Human:
Strength: 2
Mind: 5
Personality: 3
Attack: 10

Absorption: 1 heart (leather armour)
Hearts: 4
Mana: 5

Gear:
Short Bow
Leather Armour

Skills:
Heal

PD:
Use the sprite for me, I'm lacking in time to do the cut and paste, and I can't find a priest like sprite that isn't taken yet.
I would like to see some sort of bless skill or enchant weapon added soon.

Good suggestions for new skills. I will add some like this by the time you guys get to level 2

Can always suggest a lot more, I've got some experience fleshing out skill trees for RPG games... give me a call when you need a suggestion. If you're on discord you can chat me up for any ideas you might want to bounce with me.

Zarvagos, the Elven Mage

Level 1 Elf

Attributes

Strength: 1
Mind: 6
Personality: 3
Attack: 10
Absorption: 1 heart (let me know if this doesn't stack; I grabbed two pieces of armor)
Hearts: 4
Mana: 6

Gear

  • Wizard Robe
    1/2 heart absorption
  • Wizard School Ring
    1/2 heart absorption

Skills

  • Fireball

Absorption stacks.
I will clarify in the rule book.

How do you get your formatting to work? When I copy paste it doesn’t carry over.

Markdown

You use "* " to do bullet points.
Two asterisks around something to do italics.
A single # followed by a space to do a heading. Add more # to get a smaller heading.

Thunk, the Human Barbarian

Level 1 Human

Attributes

Strength: 5
Mind: 1
Personality: 3
Attack: 10+1
Absorption: 1 heart
Hearts: 4
Mana: 1

Gear

  • Leather armor - 1 heart absorption
  • Long sword - Damage 1 heart STR 4

Skills

  • Swing through - always on

Thunk is a soldier without a unit. Thunk is big, strong, brave and... not so smart. However the sincerity & loyalty shown wins over people that can see the charm through the thick skull.

I can’t decide on my avatar. Thunk is defiantly NOT CUTSIE. 🤔

I found a new one for you

This looks like fun, I saw it because #loreshapergames resteemed it. Is it open to anyone currently or have you got a full queue of alpha testers already?

Open to all. Please join us. I'm also running a zombie adventure game that just began, so it will take a few days or weeks before another player intake.

It is open. You are welcome to create a player and jump in

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Okay, let's give this a shot. I am Quaid, son of a hunter father and a healer mother. As a child I was torn between both vocations in a passive-aggressive marital struggle.

It might be worthwhile to promote this game on the #happystream; then you might even win the contest again. The more people that actually USE the happystream, the more eyeballs that will see the other posts and the more effective it becomes. It just takes time for it to catch on, but if people don't regularly use it then herd mentality won't kick in. It needs to be consistently used.

You are correct
I will make sure I use it

Thanks. I re-steemed your game just the same. Can't hurt to use BOTH tactics.

I like the idea, but it's missing several pieces from the explanation. I don't have enough time right now to mention all of them, but I hope I can do it tomorrow, but basically, how will players PLAY, where are the board game maps? what about players who can't connect every day to internet? stuff like that. I like the idea, but it feels incomplete. Of course, it's an alpha, but what are Steemcoins? will they be tradable for Steem in any way, can players barter between themselves? Stuff like that.

Thanks for stopping by. This is one of many board games we play in our #playbypost community.
The board game maps are loaded when the players go on quests.
Here is a link to an example of one of our other games for you to see:

Thanks for the questions, most of us here are use to doing #playbypost so we tend to overlook the questions of new players.
If you can’t connect everyday that is ok, the game master or your team can move for you. Any turn done if you are not online will do everything to make sure you take zero damage.
SteemCoins are the in game currency. We are currently working allowing items to be trade by players (Like steemmonsters does) but it is a little ways off.

Here is a link about it:

I hope that answers your questions.

You should have a link to the game here shouldn’t you?

This is the 1st post in this session. We are using a #playbypost system.
Here is a link to show an example of how game play works, it is from one of our other ongoing games.

@happyme - you should check these guys out too!

I posted my games there too, but no bites from them yet. Perhaps because I didn't include any picture. I'm not sure I can add pictures with my connection. I think I tried once but couldn't figure out how to do it. My discord is very limited. I'm not able to use a lot of the features.
