Winning?

in #tariffs6 years ago (edited)

I spoke with two farmers over breakfast about their crops. Both are in their early sixties. Both are fourth generation farmers working family Georgia farms since they were old enough to go into the fields with their fathers and grandfathers. Both voted for Trump.

Their Trump support and their crop futures look uncertain. If the trade war is not resolved in a few weeks, both will lose money on crops already planted. Mr Jim, the one most willing to speak about the situation, said he put over $100,000 into this years crop but will be lucky to get $70,000 out of it if prices do not fall further. If he sells his crop at a loss like many others will do, flooding the market, the prices will fall even more for those who do the same after him. Insurance will not cover the loss. Storage until prices rebound is expensive but may be necessary to keep from losing fifty percent of his investment.

Mr Jim said this may be his last year farming and he will need to cut back on spending. He won't be voting in November. He said he will cut his losses in that area too. Mr Lloyd chimed in with, "That son a bitch!" I believe Trump lost two of his base this morning.

By the time this guy is through, America will have lost all good trade partners and maybe out of the G7. Running a country is not the same as running a reality show tweeting all day like some idle teenager :)

You see how his supporters are. Imagine putting up with them every day of your life. Even when he crashes the economy (not if) they will blame everyone but their orange god.

But according to Paul Krugman the economy was supposed to collapse when he was elected. At some point in the next 6 years we will see a market correction, given all the growth we have to, what will you say where there is not a "collapse"?

Another typical Trump Chump. They always scream about their right to free speech, guns, immigrants, and nationalism. I got a friend of his who worked for the county fired for his "free speech" activities including a bit about how his black students should not be educated but instead put into factories as slave labor.

"the good trade partners" are the ones screwing us? Do we need them more than they need us? Tweeting seems to be working out great, that's how things are now, Trump is as hip as a teenager.

Or as hip as a man who chose a screen name from a character on the sitcom Friends, at the very least.

Says the guy who caught the reference ;)

LOL. So you are only fun when drunk? I am still trying to figure out the 51 - probably not year of birth but maybe sports team number.

I think somehow Trump might just pull it out in a district populated by Mr. Jims, especially given all this:
President Trump’s tax cuts have revitalized the American economy, with 54 percent of Americans now rating the economy as good or excellent, the highest ever recorded by CNBC.
Businesses are bringing money held overseas back to the United States.
In the first quarter of 2018, more than $300 billion was repatriated back to the United States, setting a new record high, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
Optimism among employers has reached historic highs in the 6 months since the tax cuts.
Manufacturer optimism has reached its highest level in the 20-year history of the National Association of Manufacturers survey.
Small business optimism stands at its second-highest level on record since the National Federation of Independent Business began its survey 45 years ago.
The economy looks poised to continue its winning streak, with many economists expecting second quarter GDP growth to exceed 4 percent.
A WIN FOR AMERICAN WORKERS AND FAMILIES: American workers and families have seen some of the biggest benefits from President Trump’s tax cuts.
Americans are seeing more money in their paychecks following President Trump’s cuts.
More than 6 million American workers have received a bonus as a result of the tax cuts.
In the first 3 months of 2018, nominal hourly compensation for workers grew at its fastest rate in at least a decade.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe now is a good time to find a quality job, according to Gallup.
The unemployment rate has fallen to 3.8 percent, matching the lowest level in nearly 50 years.
Job openings reached a record high of 6.7 million in April 2018, topping the number of job seekers for the first time on record.
Families are benefiting from lower utility bills, as 30 million Americans in at least 30 states have had their utility bills cut as a result of the tax cuts.
American workers can expect to see even more gains moving forward, as employers plan to hire more workers and boost compensation according to recent surveys.
CRITICS’ PREDICTIONS FALL FLAT: The positive results of President Trump’s tax cuts are proving the alarmist opponents flat-out wrong.
The dire predictions by critics of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act simply do not match up with the incredible results seen over the last 6 months.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) referred to the bill to “Armageddon.”
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed, “what has been sold as a job creator and wage booster will, of course, do little of either.”
The day after President Trump’s election, the liberal columnist and economist Paul Krugman said, “we are very probably looking at a global recession, with no end in sight.”

If Mr. Jim did decide to vote would he vote for open borders and gun control?
It's not hard to find articles spreading anti Trump/tariff FUD.

It is a farming district. They take out loans to plant the yearly crop. All are affected by the Trump trade war. It was expected to go blue in 2024 because of die off, but the switch back to Dem has been moved up thanks to Perdue and Trump.

First layoffs from the first round of the Trump trade war. All 500 employees could be fired by labor day. Maybe they can one of those Trump jobs.

From your article, I hope it doesn't dampen the schadenfreude you were feeling about those Americans who lived in an area that the majority voted for Trump in losing their jobs:

Nearly 4,700 American jobs have been created since the steel and aluminum tariffs went into effect as businesses like U.S. Steel restart blast furnaces for in Illinois, and Century Aluminum reopened an aluminum smelter in Kentucky. Many of these positions are union jobs that come with $60,000 salaries and benefits.
"Idled steel and aluminum capacity is being restarted as we sit here," said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross at a Senate hearing last week.

and

The workers who lost their jobs on June 15 were contract workers paid about $10 an hour,

Seeing as there are now more jobs than unemployed people who can't find a job?

I am sure there are plenty of other low paying jobs without benefits in their area. Maybe a Dollar General or Taco Bell since they have thousands of unfilled openings. Or they could move to kentucky to get a union job(gasp, union) which takes a lot of money and either they lose on house value or the landlord does. Then again they could get that one high paying manufacturing job with specialized skills listed in Savannah! Winning!
Funny how you again missed the part about 40,000+ jobs created by tariffs but 250,000 to 500,000 lost in a sector due to tariffs. Cherry picking for your narrative?

LOL, was I supposed to list all the high paying jobs for you? that was a sample, yet another false assumption/ faulty conclusion.
Funny how you left out how "40,000+ jobs created by tariffs but 250,000 to 500,000 lost in a sector due to tariffs"

is yet another projection and not something that has actually happened!

You didn't read the line after that where it said that the effects of the tariffs are difficult to predict?

mmm more FUD. The oil industry will be fine. did you read that whole article?

Trump appears to be using the tariffs as a bargaining chip, as he's often bemoaned the fact that the U.S. has trade deficits with several of its largest trading partners.
"It’s easy to imagine they’ll be repealed after serving their purpose," Robertson said.

And another winner. These stories are being reported around the country every day now. The Trump trade war is affecting every sector of our economy - even synthesizers.
