Trying Airtasker for the first time (plus $25 credit if you sign up with my link)
Yesterday I was going to help move a bed from Brunswick to Preston (not a huge trip but a reasonable way from home). The Corolla isn't suited to this kind of job so we had organised a "man with a van" off Gumtree. Unfortunately, 15 minutes before the pick up time he called, claiming that his van had gearbox troubles and was getting repaired. We arrived at the pick-up point and weighed up our options. One was to find a hire place and go and pick up a van to use. Instead we decided to try Airtasker.
Airtasker is like an Uber for odd jobs. You post a job with details and an approximate budget and users bid a price to complete the job. There is feedback and user ratings and also a section with badges showing various qualifications and skills. I had never used Airtasker before. I had seen their bad marketing on TV (see the image below) and had a read a fairly negative article about worker conditions and the "all care no responsibility" ethos of many of these casual job apps and websites (sharing, odd jobs, food delivery etc) - this might be a more philosophical article in the future.
For this particular task - a short run delivery - it was excellent. It was a quick and easy registration process and my advert had five offers (with varying prices and details) within a couple of minutes. We could message the bidders to confirm times/details etc and then accept an offer. The job got done quickly and easily, and payment gets done via credit card in the app so there is no haggling over cash. Although it might not be the best system for some tasks, this solved our lack of delivery vehicle quickly and easily. I can definitely see myself using Airtasker again.
If you want to try Airtasker you can use my referral link below. You get $25 towards your first task (and after you have used it I get a $10 credit too so everybody wins 😃)

hey @datascience, I jumped onto airtasker a few months back to try and earn some coin. I applied for about 30 different jobs that I felt that i could do. The problem with their setup though is that you have a reputation score (based on feedback from jobs completed), and a completion score (based on how many jobs you applied for, that you actually completed).
So when selecting someone to do a job for you, you look for someone with good scores.
Catch 22: The only way to get scores is to get selected, and complete a job. People always choose someone from their list of applicants, with the highest score.
As such, I never actually got an jobs from it. So even after 3 months of applying for random shit jobs, for peanuts, I still had a 0 rating, as no one was selecting me.
Peace.
How annoying. Sounds like it is hard to break in to.
