Outsmarted by Technology

in #technology6 years ago (edited)

Technology is evolving at a rapid pace. Computers came along an extended our ability to interact with information, and then with each other through the Internet. Smartphones came along and increased the connectivity even further, while also increasing the use of technology to replace common tasks we use our brain for. We don't memorize phone numbers anymore.

We don't really use our memory for a lot of things when we can simply "google" up the answer we want. Technology is used to make us smarted by using it, but in some ways it makes us dumber by being depended on technology to do things for us. We don't develop our own abilities.

Is technology outsmarting us? Is technology going to be intelligent on it's own with the development of a true artificial intelligence that is conscious and has consciousness? What does that mean for humans and humanity?

AI takeover? Killer robots? It looks like the sci-fi predictions from the past (about our current 2nd decade of the 21st century) are not panning out... Pick a sci-fi story from the mid 19th century and see that many predictions were being made for the fabled year 2000 and shortly thereafter. The AIs, robots, moon base that many envisioned back in the mid and late 20th century, is still a dream, not a reality.

These ideas, the idealized good along with the fears, have been portrayed in movies and other fiction alike. Machines that out think us in terms of calculation speeds have been around for decades. Now they are beginning to excel at facial recognition and driving us around, possibly doing thing better than we can. Enter the age of automation and AI.

One semi-AI (not really an AI) that many people have heard of is IBM's Deep Blue computer program that took on Garry Kasparov at chess. Kasparov won in 1996, but Deep Blue won on the rematch in 1997. This is what Deep Blue looks like:

IBM also made the Watson artificial intelligence system which took on Jeopardy contestants in 2011 and won the first-place prize of $1,000,000.

Similar to Deep Blue, another computer program, AlphaGo, was developed for the game Go, and was the first to beat a professional human Go player.

On Steemit, we have seen some bot posts that have "AI" generated content. It might pass off as human, but not compete with the best writers humanity has to offer.

Programmers are getting better and developing smarter programs to compete with human non-linear intuitive computational skills and creativity. AlphaGo apparently used "intuition" and "creativity", according to it's co-founder Demis Hassabis. It played a move that departed from established methodologies that people have used in the game for centuries. It was unexpected, and it won. This might be a form of computational creativity.

If creativity, painting, and other abilities can be mimicked, what about imagination, emotion and consciousness itself? Programmers are working on this as well, but it can be a distant future before it actually gets done, if at all. We have yet to understand how our own consciousness emerges, let alone create one ourselves from scratch.

The decision making process of a program is not simply neutral. The programmer has biases, and these can be translated into the functionality of the program. The program is only as good as the programmer.

Whatever the abilities that surpass our own, programs need to be developed with certain rules in mind, and possibly a "kill switch" in case things go out of control. If all they want to do is make us happy, maybe they would inject pharmaceuticals in all our food, or cut up our brains to make us happy all the time. Goals or rules like morality, need to be hard coded.

Letting a program pick its own objectives can potentially result in disaster. If a programmer lets go, and the program takes over it's own reigns and further development, then the programmer better be sure he envisioned all future scenarios and covered his bases because there might not be a debug feature where you can go correct a mistake, update or run a new version.

For now, the prospect of disaster or being saved by an AI, are remote. What is more likely is a type of automaton programmed zombie, an artificial general intelligence, not a true intelligence. An AGI resembles human behavior and responses, some functionality, but has no consciousness. If we are ever able to figure out how our own consciouses emerges and is created, then we might be able to create a consciousness that is artificial.

When that becomes a reality, we should be careful about what we are doing to our own fate, destiny or future. A Westworld or Matrix scenario could develop. Governments and corporations like to have control of information. Information is knowledge, and knowledge is power. The information war has been ongoing for a long time in human history in efforts to control people.

An AI that is not constructed morally can end up reigning over the information super highway (Internet) and control who has access to what, even remove information by getting into (up-until-then) secure systems. That would be a large nail in our proverbial coffins as a free people with access to information.

Thank you for your time and attention. I appreciate the knowledge reaching more people. Peace.

Artificial intelligence does have advantages as it will make life relatively easier. However at the same time, it has many disadvantages. It will make humans even dumber than recent technology has

Welcome back from your vacation (if you are back). Hope you were able to relax.

I was recently discussing this topic with my girlfriend. She was unable to tell me what my phone number is, but I can recite hers as well as many others from memory. I remember my phone number growing up, my friends numbers growing up as well.

I noticed back in the 90's this phenomena occurring with simple math and calculators. I worked at a computer chip manufacturer, and so many chips fit in a tube. There was a question over how many we had in stock, and I was able to calculate in my head faster than my managers secretary could punch the numbers in. For me what was more telling was the way she looked at me in awe, as though some superhuman feat had just happened.

As technology continues growing, the majority of people will delegate their abilities to these processes for sure. Which is not surprising, since as a society we delegate everything to politicians who in turn delegate to the experts (these experts are determined by their ability to make the politicians bank accounts grow).

No surprise that delegation (out-sourcing) is based on money... that's the majority of use-cases on Steem too :P Way to go on being a sharp mind :)

The dependent of technology also makes people never enrich their mental map, in case of memorizinh the track, it is my own experience on memeorizing the track I always depend on the map application at my smartphone. I was very panic if i cant find any network coverage or low battry because I cant use the map directions. Technology is make the users depend on it. Through your post it is the action to raise the awareness for all of us to keep on believe to our brain ability. Thankyou @krnel

I like your post

Educative writeup!!!!!!!!
True
Technology is fast taking over our sense of creativity and logical thinking

Fortunately AI is not right around the corner.

We haven't even come close to developing a system that could choose its own goals. We barely have systems that can choose from a list of goals... those goals only being 1,2,3,4,5. They have no meaning to the computer. It doesn't know what they are, it doesn't know what would be best for it.

We haven't even explored consciousness. (because it is in direct violation of materialist science) And such, we couldn't ever create an artificial consciousness accept by accident.

We do not even know the world we live in. We think we live on a ball earth, and live in linear time. How can we give something intelligence when the basics of our world are mistaken?

If we accidentally created an AI, would it talk to the angels, ghosts and elves around it? And then, we would conclude that we made an insane AI?

A very insightful and inspiring post, dear @krnel ...
I am intrigued by this statement: "Technology is used to make us smarter by using it, but in some ways it makes us dumber by being depended on technology to do things for us. We don't develop our own abilities."
Yes, these are the negative impacts of technology. Our abilities become stagnant. We stop to develop ourselves. Does this also mean that we humans as a species will cease to evolve?

Thanks for sharing...❤

We seem to be devolving cognitively :P

Yea I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, in terms of how rapid technological advancements have been made in the past 15years.

I also couldn’t agree more with you saying how we don’t need to learn anything anymore, we just ask google and then forget... in my opinion, people born in the late 80s/early 90s and up, have much worse retaining memory skills, compared to those who were born in the early 70s or before, especially those in the 50s and early 60s. Back then people had to read, learn and remember for any information. If you wanted something you had to put in the effort, not just ask google and 10 seconds later forget...

In some ways it’s better as we can just find anything out instantly, but it’s not as good for development of the brain. Unless we use it as a research tool and take notes from everything we learn and revise etc..

Yup, it's good... but their are negatives to our potential :/ I agree, our ability to recall info is being hampered from external dependence...

With the ability of artificial intelligence technology that is increasing the functions that can be done by humans may be replaceable, but human feelings and empathy can not be replaced by the technology
