Firstly, most people see this a recent phenomenon but it isn't. Going back 200+years to the industrial revolution, machines were being invented that were doing the work of many men. Faster, more efficiently and more accurately.

Going further back, books in ancient times were hand written, and then when the printing press was invented in the mid 15th century, suddenly the work of book writers was gone. All through history this has happened as the technology of the day developed. The cascade of effect for everything, whether it be small or large has had an impact on economies and workers.

One last tiny example. When motor cars were invented, they quickly replaced horse drawn transport. Anyone in an industry connected to horses was affected. Farriers who made the shoes and harnesses, companies that provided feed and even the people who built stables had their livliehoods threatened but the difference between humans and the rest of life on this planet is that we are very dynamic, we are very quick to adapt to changes in circumstance and environment and that's what we as a race do. We adapt!

Fast forward to the 1980'sand 90's, not so long ago and I was working as an engineer in an office and computers were being introduced at a hell of a rate and people were stressing about their jobs. The company I worked for had 223,000 employees across the UK and in the early 90's, due to the rise of technological aids, they decided that they no longer needed so many staff and began a program of voluntary redundancy. Over 6 years, the staff levels decreased to just 168,000. I was one of the people who volunteered to quit and I never been unemployed.

I had to adapt and change my path, and so that is what I did. Instead of looking upon the cuts as a bad thing, I looked upon it as an opportunity to do something else, something I wanted to try. The computers taking over the manual part of our jobs actually CREATED opportunity to improve my life.

Despite the UK population rising dramatically, and despite the technological advances you worry about, unemployment has changed very little, and when it has, it can be linked to problems with the economy rather than with technological innovation!

Right up to today, and as is shown by your question people still have concerns but it is nothing to worry about, we will adapt and create new opportunity for work. If eventually it becomes more difficult, we will change the economics as we are seeing today with a rise in Universal Basic Income schemes and the new tokenised economy.

On a more individual level, we must now more than ever take more personal responsibility and look after our own health and well being. People are not becoming more lazy, just adapting to new situations!!

Don't worry, nothing changes but yet everything never stops changing. Its a called 'progress' and its caused by humans intense inquisitiveness, so embrace and enjoy the all the new wonders that brings into our lives :-)

Technology is causing some disturbing trends among children, however. The internet has made rampant cheating in high school classes far too easy (although the same tech allows me to catch them, it wastes everyone's time--time that could be spent learning.) Reading skills and attention spans are down, too. The brain processes screen text differently than physical text. Tech is changing children's developing brains just as surely as if we gave them Borg implants. Time will tell what we are gaining v. losing.

You're absolutely right. My wife is an Occupational therapist specialising in Autism and other learning difficulties and she is seeing an alarming trend in problems in young kids who have frequent tablet use. Parents need to be more responsible, but I guess a similar event would be the dawn of videos and dvds....
