Not so long ago we spent a week on Penang in Malaysia. The journey took place over the island Langkawi, on which we were before. The flight from Langkawi to Penang was very pleasant and brief and already on the landing approach you could see the 13.5 km long bridge connecting Penang with the mainland.

Vor nicht allzu langer Zeit waren wir für eine Woche auf Penang in Malaysia. Die Anreise fand fand über die Insel Langkawi statt, auf welcher wir zuvor waren. Der Flug von Langkawi nach Penang war sehr angenehm und kurz und schon im Landeanflug konnte man die 13,5 km lange Brücke, welche Penang mit dem Festland verbindet, erkennen.
The bridge leads into the town of Butterworth, where I imagine hills full of butterflops and creamy clouds, but of course it´s not like that. By taxi we have then fought through the festive evening traffic and arrived at our hotel Heliconia.
The hotel is very new and opened only in July of this year, nevertheless the rooms were extremely smelly. It smelled very sweetish musty and later we also discovered why...
...when we wanted to sleep around midnight, we found bedbugs. Oh shit, there was no more sleep to think about.
So again packed the backpacks and off on hotel search in the middle of the night in Georgetown. Fortunately, the Sunway Hotel had free rooms and we checked in for the next 6 nights. It was a bit above our budget but finally a nice big clean room with breakfast buffet. Breakfast buffet, do you really know what a blessing that was?
Die Brücke führt in die Stadt Butterworth, hierbei stelle ich mir Hügel voller Butterflöckchen und Sahnewölkchen vor, ist aber natürlich nicht so. Mit dem Taxi haben wir uns dann durch den Feierabendverkehr durchgekämpft und sind in unserem Hotel Heliconia angekommen.
Das Hotel ist sehr neu und hat erst im Juli diesen Jahres eröffnet, trotzdem waren die Zimmer extrem muffelig. Es hat sehr süßlich moderig gerochen und später haben wir dann auch entdeckt warum...
...als wir gegen Mitternacht schlafen wollten haben wir nämlich Bettwanzen gefunden. Oh Schreck, da war an Schlaf nicht mehr zu denken.
Also wieder die Rucksäcke gepackt und ab auf Hotelsuche mitten in der Nacht in Georgetown. Glücklicherweise hatte das Sunway Hotel noch freie Zimmer und wir haben für die nächsten 6 Tage hier eingecheckt. Ist zwar etwas über unserem Budget aber endlich wieder ein schönes großes sauberes Zimmer mit Frühstücksbuffet. Frühstücksbuffet, wisst Ihr eigentlich was das für ein Segen ist?
The location of the hotel is also convenient, we can walk to the Komtar Tower.
Komtar Tower is the tallest building on Penang and central bus stop, so you can use almost all major bus lines from here.
Furthermore there are 3 large shopping malls around it with large Post Office and some restaurants.
From our hotel, we can also reach the historic center of Georgetown, along with the popular Chulia Street and Little India.
The bus ride here on the island is uncomplicated and cheap. On a good day we went to Penang Hill with the Bus Line 204. Penang-Hill is a very popular excursion destination, not only for tourists.
On our visit we saw a lot of school classes. The mountain is about 820 meters high and can be "climbed" with the cogwheel railway. Partly a very steep rise.
Thank God, the train is so crowded with passengers, so you can´t see the ground through the windows :-)
From the top you have a nice view of Georgetown, the coast and the bridge. Above is a temple, a mosque and a church.
On Penang, Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists live peacefully together. Religious is therefore considered a beautiful, pleasant atmosphere.
Die Lage des Hotels ist auch vorteilhaft, wir können zu Fuß den Komtar Turm erreichen. Der Komtar Turm ist das höchste Gebäude von Penang und zentrale Bushaltestelle, so dass man fast alle wichtigen Buslinien von hier aus benutzen kann. Weiter befinden sich 3 große Shopping-Malls drumherum mit großer Postfiliale und einigen Restaurants.
Von unserem Hotel aus können wir auch die Altstadt von Georgetown samt der beliebten Chulia Street sowie Little India erreichen. Das Busfahren hier auf der Insel ist unkompliziert und günstig. Wir sind bei schönem Wetter zum Penang-Hill mit der Linie 204 gefahren. Penang-Hill ist ein sehr beliebtes Ausflugsziel, nicht nur bei Touristen.
Bei unserem Besuch haben wir sehr viele Schulklassen gesehen. Der Berg ist etwa 820 Meter hoch und kann mit der Zahnradbahn "bestiegen" werden. Teilweise ein sehr steiler Anstieg. Gott sei Dank stopfen die hier die Bahn so voll mit Fahrgästen, so dass man sich den angsteinflößenden Anblick ersparen kann :-)
Von oben hat man einen schönen Blick auf Georgetown, die Küste und die Brücke. Oben befindet sich ein Tempel, eine Moschee und eine Kirche. Auf Penang leben Moslems, Christen, Hindus und Buddhisten friedlich miteinander. Religiös betrachtet also eine schöne, angenehme Atmosphäre.
Six days were probably a little too long for Penang, but we had time. We also spent some time in some shopping malls, looked at the old town, we were in nice cafes on Chulia Street and Little India and also made a detour to the Clan Jettys.
The Clan Jettys are built on the banks built residential settlements on stilts. They have existed since 1910 and are inhabited by Chinese families.
As mentioned, everything is within walking distance, so we could walk from the Clan Jettys back to Chulia Street.
Chulia Street is the "entertainment area" of Georgetown, with everything you need: backpackers, bars, restaurants, hostels, cafes and it also is a the relight district of Georgetown.
Sechs Tage waren wahrscheinlich etwas zu lange für Penang, aber wir hatten ja Zeit. Wir haben uns auch wieder in einigen Shopping-Malls herumgetrieben, die Altstadt angeschaut, wir waren in schönen Cafes in der Chulia Street und in Little India und haben auch einen Abstecher zu den Clan Jettys gemacht.
Die Clan Jettys sind am Ufer gebaute Wohnsiedlungen auf Stelzen. Sie bestehen schon seit 1910 und werden von chinesischen Familien bewohnt.
Wie schon erwähnt ist alles fußläufig erreichbar, so dass wir von den Clan Jettys zurück zur Chulia Street laufen konnten.
Die Chulia Street ist das "Vergnügungsviertel" von Georgetown mit allem was dazu gehört: Backpacker, Bars, Restaurants, Hostels, Cafes und leichten Mädchen.
Everyone has a crush for the food on Penang and I would like to express myself.
Penang is known for its many Hawker centers. These are collections of many food stalls on the street where you can eat cheaply and have a huge selection. The Food culture is mainly influenced by Chinese people . I personally do not like the dishes particularly. We expected more flavor, more spices, just more WOW!!! But the dishes tasted totally bland and all the same.
Better is the Indian cuisine. The spicy tandori chicken, the legendary naan bread and the lentils (Daal) are divine.
We also tried the Penang typical Beef Rendang. It is similar to our goulash because the meat is stewed for a long time, producing a thick sauce. But it was once again so spicy, that you only try to satisfy your hunger and get more or less undisturbed out of the matter. It is really tasty but just too spicy for our European tongue.
Alle schwärmen für das Essen auf Penang und dazu möchte ich mich auch äussern.
Penang ist bekannt für seine vielen Hawker-Center. Dies sind Ansammlungen von vielen Garküchen auf der Straße wo man günstig Essen kann und eine riesige Auswahl hat. Sie sind hauptsächlich von chinesischer Kultur geprägt. Mir persönlich schmecken die Gerichte nicht besonders. Ich hätte mehr Geschmack, mehr Gewürze, einfach mehr Pänggg erwartet aber das Zeug schmeckt total fad und alles gleich.
Besser ist da definitiv die indische Küche. Die würzigen Tandori Chicken, das sagenhafte Naanbrot und die Linsen (Daal) sind göttlich. Wir haben auch das für Penang typische Beef Rendang probiert. Es ähnelt unserem Gulasch weil das Fleisch stundenlang geschmort wird und dabei eine dicke Soße entsteht. Aber es war wieder einmal so höllenscharf, dass Du nur versuchst Deinen Hunger zu stillen und mehr oder weniger unversehrt aus der Sache zu kommen.
Es ist wirklich lecker aber halt einfach zu scharf für unserer europäische Zunge.
Penang or Georgetown offers great photographs, especially architecturally.
The Old Town of Georgetown is rightly listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. But unfortunately the responsible persons have noticed too late because the decay of the historic buildings is in full swing. Partially, you have to be afraid of falling stones or falling tiles.
But when you look at it, there are simply beautiful buildings that you almost have to call as works of art. I hope very much will be restored in the next few years. Sometimes you get the feeling that it is important for the people here to build tens of new large exaggerated expensive shopping malls (which are then empty), instead of preserving historical heritage.
Penang is truly beautiful and definitely worth a trip.
Penang bzw. Georgetown bietet tolle Fotomotive, vor Allem architektonisch. Zu Recht wird die Altstadt von Georgetown auf der Liste der Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO geführt. Aber leider haben das wohl die Verantwortlichen zu spät gemerkt denn der Verfall der historischen Gebäude ist in vollem Gange. Teilweise muss man beim Herumschlendern Angst haben von herabfallenden Mauerstücken oder Dachziegeln getroffen zu werden.
Aber wenn man mal davon absieht gibt es einfach wunderschöne Gebäude die man schon fast als Kunstwerke bezeichnen muss. Ich hoffe sehr, dass in den nächsten Jahren vieles noch restauriert wird. Manchmal hat man das Gefühl, dass es den Leuten hier wichtiger ist zig neue große übertrieben teure Shopping-Malls (die dann eh leer stehen) zu bauen anstatt historisches Kulturgut zu erhalten.

I'm commenting here because as a Malaysian who has been to Penang, I have to say... you missed out on the some of the best food. Durian, Char Kwey Teow (Fried Kwey Teow Noodles) and Nyonya Food... hngg; If you ever travel there again, I'd suggest for you to check these out, as well as Mahkota Parade.

@betterthanhome I used to be the same when I was the kid, but once you taste it you either like it or not. Once in a life time thing, same as blutwurst for me (honest) I avoided it because of the smell, but once I tasted it... it was a completely different world
you´re right. Next time I got the chance I will try ;). I don´t like Blutwurst :)
Be wary though, Malaysian Durian tastes different from Durian from any other country; Thailand is creamier, Malaysia is more flavorful but the smell still remains pretty much the same

This post is well-done and evocative. A few months ago, I spent a week in Georgetown, Penang, and found it to be a very pleasant place (even though I generally avoid cities when I travel).
Your comments re the food are spot on. At the hawker centers, you can find almost anything to suit your tastes – from crispy pork (makes a good bacon-replacement for breakfast, methinks) to fried rice and various types of seafood. The greatest thing is that almost all of it is fresh and very healthy. No processed crap at the hawker centers.
