Summer in Yellowstone National Park, aka Wait... I'm living on top of a volcano?

in #travelfeed6 years ago

We finally arrived at our destination in Yellowstone National Park on 5/30/18. This was to be our home for the next 3½ months. We lined up our jobs here in the park almost a year earlier and since leaving Florida we have yet to look back.

Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park in the U.S. and is also considered to be the first National Park in the world. A large portion of the park is made up of the Yellowstone Caldera. The word caldera comes from the Latin word caldaria which means "The hole where lava and shit spews from the earth upon eruption" or "boiling point", whichever suits your fancy. Home to over 10,000 geo-thermal features including Fumaroles,Mudpots,Hot Springs and Geysers Yellowstone is a reminder that the planet we live on is a living, breathing entity with awe-inspiring power ready to be unleashed beneath our feet.

I can't believe how lucky @juliabreheny, @nickthetravelkid and myself are to get the run of this place this summer. Seeing some of these geo-thermal features is much akin to being on another planet.

Nearing the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring you can see blue colored smoke rising from surface.

The Grand Prismatic Hot Spring - NOT FOR SWIMMING. It looks inviting but the water here is near boiling and has a high acidic content.

The smell of sulfur assaults your nose as you approach this incredible spring.

Black Dragon Caldron boils with life.

You can LITERALLY hear mouth of this cave roaring as waves of boiling hot water lap against the interior walls of the cave. Hence the name, Dragons Mouth Spring.DragonsMouth.jpg

Mudpots are melting rocks... WTF!

Mud Volcano, a blistering hot mudpot, always active, ALWAYS HOT!

Fumaroles are everywhere!

I hope these pictures do some justice to these incredible geo-thermal features. There is still so much of the park left for us to explore and we can't wait to share our incredible experiences.

Here's a picture of @nickthetravelkid with the Canyon Falls in the background.

Tune in next time when I explore some of the wildlife here at Yellowstone National Park.

Thank you, It's nice to be recognized and appreciated.

We've been wondering about you guys!! Your photos are awesome too. So what exactly does it mean to "run" the place for the next three months? What are your jobs? That's so cool, all of it actually!! Good for you guys to "not look back"...why on earth would you?!! And such a cool experience for your son too!

Lol, we’re not running it we have the run of it. Haven’t been very active due to limited to no internet. We just had satellite internet hooked up 2 days ago so that’s pretty exciting. There are a ton of ravens here and every time I see one I can’t help but think of Brian. Please give him my best.

On a side note, someone downvoted this post. Any idea why that was done or are they as my son calls it “trolling” me?

haha @jbreheny that's funny! There I had you guys running the whole place! Brian says hello; he's hanging in there!

I've recently received a few downvotes as well; nonsense all of it. I think they are bots or something. Without using the "@" sign, tell me who it was. Did it register in steemworld as 0.0 or was there an amount on it?

I'm also going to pass this post onto c-squared, a new(ish) off shoot of curie in the hopes they stop by.

Tell Brian I said hello as well. He's always in my thoughts and prayers.

I saw this post regarding the downvotes... https://steemit.com/flag/@guiltyparties/the-flag-ring which gives excellent information and I was able to confirm that the downvoter was on the included list. Havent checked out Steemworld yet, that's a great idea.

I think it'll be another week or two before we ARE actually running the place. Thank you for sharing it looks like c-squared has already curated. I appreciate it.

Thank you, I will. I just wrote a post today with a few more details about him if you're interested.

I just saw that post too, thanks. I was shocked to see so many accounts on their spreadsheet; it's a sign that some people have way too much time on their hands!

I'm glad c-squared stopped by. It's not much, but it's acknowledgement for a job well done :) Enjoy!!

Hi @lynncoyle and @jbreheny I also got one of those downvotes on my last post. The account was a rep 25 started this month. No posting of any kind. The banner was less than polite. I just took it as a spoof account and moved on.
Thanks for linking the article about it. I will check that out.

I think we all are aware now @headchange that it's a bit of an epidemic going on here!

yeah I think so too lol My comment was a couple days ago. And now everybody is talking about it, Glad to see word spreading so quickly especially about the phishing.

It is good to see the collective spirit jump into protection mode 😅

wow this is superb!! i just love the photos and your writing that goes along with them, especially youngn at the end. how adorable. so this is what you've been doing. how amazing and i hope it doesn't blow while your there, or at least if it does it's painless. :p

hey, maybe i should come up and visit. hehe

hugs,
eagle

We're still trying to nail down a place near you for the month of November. Trying to find a camp host gig or something like that. We will be visiting my daughter and grandbaby there in CO Springs.

This place is absolutely incredible and if it does blow, well... what a way to go.

im fairly far from the springs. there should be places near her for fairly inexpensive. do you have a camper and much more than that? ive seen camp host jobs on workingcouples.com. i thought about it for like a second lol
lmaoooo re what a way to blow! howd i know yoid say that 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I guess I'm just too damn predictable.

pllllbbbbt

So glad you guys are back posting again. I can relate to the lack of internet situation. I must say that I found being a bit more "unplugged" a bit soothing.
I had somehow missed the fact that your jobs were at the park. Are you to be working there year round or is it a seasonal thing? What is more likely is that I still have it all wrong lol.
The @nickthetravelkid account is also a new development since I last checked in here. I will be eager to check that out that will be an interesting perspective for sure.
That looks like kind of a dinky little fence around such dangerously hot pools. I suppose one would feel the heat from a ways off and be deterred?

We are only working here for the summer. We have chosen to live our lives on the road and pick up work where we can (until we can move it all entirely online). We are only working here until mid September then my wife and I will be working in Sidney MT for 3 weeks while our son spends some time with his sister in Colorado Springs. They don't even have fences around these dangerous hot springs but rather boardwalks with signs stating to stay off the volatile and fragile ground. We are also eager to see how Nick grows as a writer and shares our adventures from his perspective.

p.s. A big part of me enjoyed being unplugged.

Must put there on my bucket list . Photos are class

Dude your own personal playground for the Summer features some of the most epic, awe-inspiring natural geological awesomeness ever known to man!

The raw power conveyed in your pictures gives a sense of the ease with which mother nature could simply end us on a whim if she so wished. The sharing of your experience absolutely solidifies my resolve to visit this impossible to describe region of our planet.

But conversely, as is often the case in nature, the sheer unrelenting beauty is stunning in a way that almost cannot be real.

I am seriously looking for the Yellowstone wildlife round-up post...That is sooo my thing 😎
