RE: December Homeschooling Miscellany

in #unschooling5 years ago

I love to see kids helping and being creative. I keep hearing so many people complaining that their kids are just playing games and spend hours with their phones or in front of tv. What they don't realize is that it's them who need to change it.

You do so many activities together as a family. Your kids must be happy to have you as their parent! I wish that you keep such atmosphere even when they leave your home and will be visiting you from time to time :) I'm sure that your 'get togethers' will be full of fun and love.

Thank you for sharing!

Well...mine do a fair bit of that too XD and sometimes it frustrates me to the point of telling them to bloody well get off and do something else, or make something while they're on there instead of consuming mindless crap all day every day!

I get told to do that by other people constantly as well. And I don't know if they really like having me as a parent or not, but this kind of thing is a bit hard to compare XD

But then we go out and do things, and sometimes when I'm feeling like a really, really mean parent, on the days that we aren't going out I'm kicking them off their screens because there is stuff around the house that needs to be done. And most of the time they stay off themselves because after chores playing outside is so much more fun, only times they go back is if it's particularly hot or cold outside XD

Seriously though I don't think people realise just how much stuff can be learned from computer games. Even with the shooters like Fortnite (which I currently really, really hate thanks to my youngest going on this binge where he was trading weapons and then desperately wanted to blow real money on some of the more powerful guns because he was too lazy to do the grindwork related with being able to get the blueprints and materials to build them) there's a lot of problem solving and mental gymnastics and on the fly resource management that you have to do while not dying. This kind of stuff does come in useful in meatspace, even if you are usually less at risk of dying XD

Also, to give my kids credit where it's due, they're usually pretty good at regulating their own screen usage and will get off and do something else and don't always binge watch nonstop ;D

Thanks for dropping by :D

I was never into the gaming but I can imagine that there is a lot to learn as well. But I still believe that time spent on computer should be limited. As you said there is so much to do around house and also so many different games to be played outside. I remember that my parents couldn't keep me at home. We would go out with friends everyday. And now it's a problem to kick the kids out of house :D It's a difference of not even 20 years and it's like two completely different worlds..

I'm sure that the fact that your kids understand the limits and are good in regulating time spent online is also thanks to you :)
