December Homeschooling Miscellany

in #unschooling5 years ago

The teenager made the decision some time this month that he needed to be more responsible and started voluntarily practising basic life skills. One involved cooking up a batch of sausages for lunch (plus both boys just felt like sausage sizzle apparently), and while he was about it he decided to experiment with steaming some of them.

The appearance of the steamed sausages wasn't particularly well received by the @shadowlioncub, and it was noted that the flavours and textures differed with the different cooking methods. @gorc also decided he was going to start applying for jobs when we got back to Perth.

There was a family get-together as we hadn't seen JJ's brother all year (though we had seen our nephew a few times when we were dragging him and the grandparents out on excursions with us). My kids once more stole their cousins so most of what the adults had to do was keep an eye on things.

Travelling with older kids is a lot easier. We got through the airport with the help of books and electronics for the small one so he wasn't too bothered by the crowds, and the plane trip was uneventful. Being that much older, the kids were a greater help setting up for Christmas parties, with @shadowlioncub helping entertain the kids his age and the older kids helping out in the kitchen and also serving entrees.

Mum has apparently been running the staff Christmas parties like birthday parties for the attending children with party games that have prizes. The kids were split into teams and the bigs ended up being the team leaders for each team as the younger kids needed a fair bit of coordination. Some games such as the gingerbread men decorating competition didn't require teams (just plenty of negotiating skills as they were all only allowed to have one colour each and swap with someone else for the next colour they wanted, also there was a time limit) and dusted off the boys' rarely used artistic skills.

The kids got heaps of swimming practice in deep water as we spent a fair bit of time at the pool or beach. The extension to the jetty had a metal grill platform that was often swamped at high tide and had developed some tiny "rock" pools, and the pillars were collecting sea life.

On one of the trips to the pool I realised that my phone was waterproof and in a waterproof case, and after a lot of umming and ahhing and fretting as I didn't have a computer to back up all the photos I'd taken onto and also didn't want to destroy my new phone, I decided to literally take the plunge and see if we could get some underwater shots.

We quickly found out that the touch screen is useless underwater, but we could take videos. @pixietrix immediately proceeded to set up a bunch of cool underwater shoots, most of which she did on her own, and some that she coordinated with her brothers.

The kids got some pretty good presents for Christmas, including a Stikbot set and expansion for @gorc:

And one of those "disgusting" science kits for @shadowlioncub (Sprat and I were in Melbourne and saw zombies and it's right up his alley) which allowed the creation of edible gross looking things:

Last but not least, we got acquainted with a thrush who decided to build its nest on the patio. It may come from a long line of thrushes who have chosen to nest on the patio (the patio itself has changed form over the years into its current incarnation, and from when I was in high school there is usually a thrush nesting somewhere on it). My parents had nailed up a hanging basket as it was quite adamant on failing at building a nest in that specific area. We spent December and January watching the chicks being raised.

Most of December was otherwise spent chilling and hanging with family and not going out of our way to cram all the things in.

This post also appears on my blog.

@gorc, @pixietrix and @shadowlioncub are each getting 33% of the post payout (becase I can only do integers).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

I love to see kids helping and being creative. I keep hearing so many people complaining that their kids are just playing games and spend hours with their phones or in front of tv. What they don't realize is that it's them who need to change it.

You do so many activities together as a family. Your kids must be happy to have you as their parent! I wish that you keep such atmosphere even when they leave your home and will be visiting you from time to time :) I'm sure that your 'get togethers' will be full of fun and love.

Thank you for sharing!

I keep hearing so many people complaining that their kids are just playing games and spend hours with their phones or in front of tv.

Well...mine do a fair bit of that too XD and sometimes it frustrates me to the point of telling them to bloody well get off and do something else, or make something while they're on there instead of consuming mindless crap all day every day!

I get told to do that by other people constantly as well. And I don't know if they really like having me as a parent or not, but this kind of thing is a bit hard to compare XD

But then we go out and do things, and sometimes when I'm feeling like a really, really mean parent, on the days that we aren't going out I'm kicking them off their screens because there is stuff around the house that needs to be done. And most of the time they stay off themselves because after chores playing outside is so much more fun, only times they go back is if it's particularly hot or cold outside XD

Seriously though I don't think people realise just how much stuff can be learned from computer games. Even with the shooters like Fortnite (which I currently really, really hate thanks to my youngest going on this binge where he was trading weapons and then desperately wanted to blow real money on some of the more powerful guns because he was too lazy to do the grindwork related with being able to get the blueprints and materials to build them) there's a lot of problem solving and mental gymnastics and on the fly resource management that you have to do while not dying. This kind of stuff does come in useful in meatspace, even if you are usually less at risk of dying XD

Also, to give my kids credit where it's due, they're usually pretty good at regulating their own screen usage and will get off and do something else and don't always binge watch nonstop ;D

Thanks for dropping by :D

I was never into the gaming but I can imagine that there is a lot to learn as well. But I still believe that time spent on computer should be limited. As you said there is so much to do around house and also so many different games to be played outside. I remember that my parents couldn't keep me at home. We would go out with friends everyday. And now it's a problem to kick the kids out of house :D It's a difference of not even 20 years and it's like two completely different worlds..

I'm sure that the fact that your kids understand the limits and are good in regulating time spent online is also thanks to you :)

Refreshing to see that the silly season wasn't all that silly for you and your, MATE-me-halfway. The wife and I have been mulling over homeschooling more often recently, and I've used your case as one of my successful examples. The social aspect of it is what we're in contention about. Glad to see the kids getting a good dose of it on a regular basis.

So @gorc's the "Teenager" now huh? Pretty soon he'll be the little man of the house!

Yep he’s a teenager 😱

The only way to have trouble with socialisation is to minimise going out and talking to people and to basically do school at home. I still haven’t found another homeschooling group (I really should but things are getting seriously tight time wise 😖) but they do gymnastics and pixie does dance, and both the bigs are volunteering at the gym now (helping the coaches with classes and gorc also wants to help in the canteen if he’s old enough).

At the bare minimum they’re going to learn to socialise with whoever you normally socialise with which is usually a much broader cross section of the community than you get in school.

Then you might end up with a little socialite who wants to go to school purely to be surrounded by people all the time (issue I’m having with pixie at the moment, logistics of which are probably going to kill me).

I always have to warn people that it can and should be a lot of fun BUT it is also hard work and you are going to have moments of “am I doing the right thing” and wanting to put them in school purely to make them go away 😅 and that no decision has to be forever.

As I read through the word "thrush" jumped out at me for the wrong reason. Glad to see it was a bird.
We get blackbirds in our wall planters. I don't think the last one had a mate and her eggs were duds.

LoL oops! XD yep just a bird! I don't think I'd like the other kind D:

Poor blackbird :<

So many family activities together :D. Your kids are really lucky to have that much family fun together time, they probably won't realise it until they leave the nest though XD.

And good for your kid to want to learn cooking by himself =).

I try 😆and probably 🙄🤣

All my kids are pretty good at life so far, better than me at the same age!

Love these posts, ryry :) Your family is very unique and .... full with love <3 I love it * __ *

Those outings look really wonderful, really just spending time together is sometimes the stuff we need to make memories and bonds... I should make more effort to spend more time with my family tbh, I'm terrible in this regard > __ <

The photos look really great, specially the ones at the beach !

I think your boys have FOOD ARTISTRY in them!!!

... and that set with the making gross but edible stuff looks awesome fun XD

Yeh neither of my boys are traditional artists by any stretch, they will draw when inspiration strikes but otherwise feel horrible and complain about how bad they are at it if you try to make them do it. Let them loose with building things or food though XD

Finding time to just be social can be ridiculously, unnecessarily hard work >_< I blame everything on full time hours XD

Well, this all seems super fun! The thrush photo is amazingly awesome!! Poor cousins, always being dragged on fun excursions.

Oh, also... at age 19 I had moved out of home... and had to call my Dad because I had no idea how to use a washing machine. Love the boys are teaching themselves life skills and experimenting while help is at hand.

The older cousins are at school now so we’ll only be dragging the toddler around when he’s not at daycare this year 😄

Did your washing machine not have clearly marked dials? Or come with instructions? 😱
