Fails of the Urban Explorer: Burnley and Bacup

in #urbex5 years ago

Sometimes one doesn’t get into Urbex locations due to them being ‘sealed’. It doesn’t stop me from having a nosey around and taking some snaps.

IMG_8858.JPG

I always like to do a little research and find out how long they have been empty, why they were abandoned (usually not possible) and any history.

Woodside Infant School

Closed in 2000, and now sealed up tightly.

I wasn’t exactly expecting to gain entrance to this Grade II listed building and I can’t find any info on when it was built other than some extra work done to it in 1873.

It now belongs to the local council after the fools bought it for £300,000 in 2009.

There’s a free to use snap of the school sometime in the 19th century (below).

Caveman managed to get in years ago, so you can see what it used to look like inside here

IMG_8862.JPG

Walking around the circumference of the school I now find it has a double layer of anti-climbing fencing erected and little points of entry.

I technically came alone with @bingbabe waiting around in the car (she’s my bad luck charm when doing Urbex).

IMG_8860.JPG

…’The sign says, ‘Warning fragile roof’, oh really…? I would never have guessed!'...

There was one place I could have vaulted over the fencing by way of a friendly wall being there to help out.

IMG_8861.JPG

Retreat would have been more difficult as the wall was not present on the other side, which would have meant I now lived on the school grounds permanently.

IMG_8863.JPG

Someone very skinny had crawled under this part and mangled the fence beyond. I’m not skinny enough these days to take on such activities.

Broadwater Hall

This one was a drive-by, a screech of the brakes, get out and have a look around. It was a community centre and closed in 2015

It did look like this once. Some places I would really like to see demolished and these old buildings built in the 1960s are right up there.

IMG_8865.JPG

3 years later and this building is very tightly sealed. I walked all the way around it and found no entrance ways whatsoever.

IMG_8871.JPG

…’You can get on the roof but even the windows up there have those silver mesh things covering them’…

IMG_8867.JPG

IMG_8868.JPG

...'No parking my arse! Lots of spaces but nobody wants to park there anymore'...

IMG_8866.JPG

These buildings remind me of when I was a kid; ugly horrible and full of smoking beer, swilling blokes who spend all their money on shit that they shouldn't. It should be pulled down and why it's still there beats me.

RedLine.png

Waterside Mill

Just a few yards further toward the town of Bacup and another screech of the brakes. It’s like every few yards there’s some run down boarded up place.

IMG_8880.JPG

When I do a little research it’s always the same. There was a fire, this time in 2003. It’s been rotting away ever since and there are plans to demolish it and rebuild houses.

IMG_8875.JPG

It may happen but the local councils take around 15 years to decide such complicated matters and that leaves the like of yours truly free to have a look around before they are gone forever.

IMG_8877.JPG

IMG_8873.JPG

On the face of it, it looked like I could gain access but there were many bars added to the lower windows. I could peek inside and see the mess within.

IMG_8874.JPG

Spiders have taken up residence and provide me with some interesting photography.

IMG_8872.JPG

Is this a way in; balance on the wood; spike your feet and jump? Not for me, too energetic for my liking thanks.

IMG_8878.JPG

They have erected some scaffolding probably because its in danger of collapsing. I noticed support pipes inside too while looking through a barred window.

IMG_8876.JPG

…'This path has gotten a little overgrown and it's right next to a domestic property. Yet it looks un-trodden for years'…

This particular day we looked at NINE potential Urbex locations and managed to gain access to ZERO. Talks about fails! I’ll post the rest of them in a future post.

Sort:

Maybe you will have to buy one of the worst ones and make it your own secret den :0)

Not that middle one, ugh.. I hate those places.

I bet there's some of those around your way, I know there's one close to me just the same.

It's like they mass produced these ugly buildings in a certain time period.

There are a fair few near me, the sixties low buildings. What were they thinking!

Is it the large cost of demolition that stops the progress? Are they trying to preserve for some historical reasons? Very interesting!

Sometimes, in the case of the school it's a protected building and cant be demolished. The horrible club can but who knows why it's not happening. The land could be sold for housing. There's a huge shortage here.

Nice adventure dude. I think the mill and the school are the two I would be most interested in getting inside.

I've only considered one spot here in Liverpool for urbex but couldn't find an easy way in.

It's a place called Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse, I'd love to get into the half that is derelict to have a look around and take photos but it would mean climbing a 20 ft wall on a main road 🤣

I think I would end up in the cells for the night.

Thanks!.. there's a whole boatload full of stuff around your area, you just need to know where to find it. Would love to do a full day over there and visit 5 or 6 places, but you can't do it alone.. it's just too dangerous.

I plan to do another trip to Bradford soon, now that's a great place for wrecks. Like every other building is derelict, Halifax too this time.

20 feet is a little much, I do have some ladders but they are only around 6-7 feet long. Any bigger and they get too heavy for carting around.

Someone has done the dock, but the report is 2 years ago.

Halifax too this time

I recently visited the area, and stayed in Hebdon Bridge. But we did go to Halifax one day just to meet up with my uncle and aunt who were visiting from the US, they were in York so we met half way in Halifax at the cloth hall lol

I noticed how derelict Halifax was in general, I wasn't massively impressed with Halifax on the whole but we only saw the town center. Defo a good place for Urbex tho. By the way I'm not really an urban explorer, if I'm out on a bike ride and see somewhere I do think about getting in to take a few pics but I don't go out to do it on purpose.

Hey, if you're ever in Liverpool defo hit me up. I know where there are other places but as you say, it is a bit difficult and dangerous to attempt it on your own :)

I'm always up for a collaborative effort, but are your up for it and healthy enough?

It typically requires some energy and sometimes climbing, and you can meet all kinds of wierdos. I know you are not in the best of shape right now.

Yeah, that is true and a good point. Ha ha, tbh I thought maybe in the future at some point, things are a bit crazy at the moment with family issues as well as my health.

I sometimes forget that most people are happy to jump in a car and go for a day out at the drop of a hat. Lol, I miss those days when I used to leap in the Mondeo and drive off to wales to clamber up mountains ;)

Theres something so beautiful about abandoned buildings!

Most don't see it but the more impressive it is, the more I want to go in and document/photograph it.

Many are living on borrowed time and will get demolished. Then we will never see them again. I guess its the historian in me!

Thanks for the curation, appeciated.

I was driving along the other day and I saw a building i thought it might be interesting to explore. Stuff like that is much more dangerous in the US though.

I wouldn't do it there, not without my Uzi 9mm phone attachment!

Flagged for #theft

You can do what the fuck you like. I flag for reasons, you do it for retaliation and nothing else.

I have no issues with your content, do you have a problem with mine?

I filed a complaint. I did remove the flag I gave you although I do feel you should not be allowed to earn any earnings on the Steemit.com platform if you engage in pure theft actions.

I feel that we should judge the value of the post and also acknowledge that it does cost authors cryptocurrency that does have value to use a bid bot. I think it is completely wrong to remove value away from a post when that value was legitimately earned.

I do apologize if I may have possibly been too harsh on you in the past but I do feel that now is the time to end #theft and #abuse on the steemit.com platform.
