Dear readers,

Welcome to week #5 of the Vegans of Steemit Newsletter! Let's see what happened in the vegan & veggie community these past days and catch up with some of the best posts out there!

The goal of this Newsletter is to showcase the most interesting publications from our vegan Steemit community during the week, and introduce new members worth checking out. We also feature a Q&A section at the end of the newsletter, in which non-vegans can ask anything they need to know about veganism and how to get there. Help us spread the vegan love!

Contest

This is week 3 of @plantstoplanks's awesome fitness challenge, and this time it's getting interesting with a nice pushup variation. What do you say? Challenge accepted?

Our friends from @promo-mentors are also organizing a fun little contest in which you need to make a video showing what you can do with 5 Steem in your country:

vegan recipes

Many people believe that vegans don't have a lot of food choices, but they are wrong! The purpose of this section is to portray just how many different delicious meal recipes there are to choose from, the options are endless! Each week, we'll show you at least three different recipes, one for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Since I couldn't find a breakfast option for this week's newsletter, I decided to share how to make vegan mayonnaise. Because, who doesn't love mayo? Now you don't have to live without it anymore and can make it at home with a short list of very simple ingredients. Thank you @ambrosiacafe for sharing this with us!

  • In the mood of Middle Eastern food for lunch? Try making your own falafel at home, it's much easier than you think as @loveself is showing us here:

  • Those falafel were filling, so let's skip dinner and get straight to dessert, shall we? Today, @annasuvorova sets the mood with her chocolate nice-cream recipe:

activism

This week, we're learning about the ZeGeVege festival which took place in Zagreb, Croatia. The event welcomed more than 40,000 visitors, which is quite impressive. It's fantastic to see that the vegan movement is growing in all corners of this planet, so thank you @arisinho for sharing your experience with us!

Ask

Don't you miss eating meat? It's so delicious!

Vegans usually don't quit eating animals because they dislike the taste of meat. Quite the opposite, most vegans and vegetarians like it (or liked it before), so of course in the beginning for some it may seem difficult to give it up. That's why some prefer to make the change gradually, as opposed to quitting cold turkey.

Personally, when I made the change, the smell of barbecue would trigger my taste buds. It was the same thing as being on a diet and being taunted with candy, but I would never in a million years ever take a bite of dead flesh again. I'm proud to say that my willpower and my principles are much stronger than my palate's memory of salted burned flesh, and trust me, after a while you won't miss meat anymore at all. There are too many great alternatives and meat imitations out there for us to stay satisfied.

Thanks for all the efforts you take. :)
Unfortunately I have a somehow offensive question.

There are too many great alternatives and meat imitations out there for us to stay satisfied.

Don't you feel tricking yourself eating substitutes?
How about packaging and transportation costs?

I can't help thinking that with veganism becoming more than just a marginal group the amount of available (preprocessed and non-preprocessed) food - and thus also food waste, land consumption - have increased. This is not mainly the fault of vegans but being just as dependent from food industry (or even more than some meat eaters) you are accepting the interaction that happens - and which gets us more far from solving the issues industrial food production brings along.
Would love to see a statement in one of the next newsletters. :)

Thank you for this feature, I am looking forward to bring some great content in the future as well. :)
