The Wednesday Walk Wet Edition

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago

About once a week Sam and I go for a drive and walk. He's really good in the car, loves to go, and loves to find new places to mark and smell. This is one of our favorite spots, but any thoughts that Sam might be part Lab are pretty much left behind at the river.

This is in response to a Challenge by @tattoodjay to take photographs of things on a walk. Things you don’t normally see. I really like the challenge and the challenger so here I am again.

So here we are at the mighty Colorado. Actually, this is right in town of Yuma, and it's really pretty tame by the time it gets here. There is treaty mandated minimum flow, and that is basically what we have by the time the river hits this point.

Downstream bridge span.JPG

This is a look downstream from our 'swimming hole'. The three bridges you can see are the second Railroad Bridge across the Colorado, the first auto bridge across the Colorado and the I-8 freeway bridge. I'll do another post (maybe another walk) on the bridges and their significance, but today is about swimming. Or wading more correctly.

Getting Wet.JPG

Of course you knew there was going to be Sam cuteness here, didn't you? He's really a desert dog and he gets himself in a little at a time. What's the rush?

GoodSam.JPG

As you can plainly see, it's not very deep right here. Matter of fact, this is the sight of he old Ford, one of the most significant spots in the history of Yuma and the Colorado. For thousands of years this spot was the only reliable place to cross the river. It's been fought over for as long as there have been people in the area.

Bridge End-1.JPG

Not a very impressive spot to have had all the blood shed over it. There is, of course, much more history to this area. The old territorial prison is just up the hill and the site of Fort Yuma is right near too.

Riverdog.JPG

But this is really about our walk, the #wednesdaywalk. We'll have one more picture of the uber cute doggy and be on our way. Thanks for walking with us today!

Very awesome! That is cool the history of places that seem so mundane. I know of a couple off the top of my head that are like that in Michigan. There is a river down in the southern part of the state where a battle took place during the war of 1812 I think. It is only just recently they put a historic site there I think. There is also an old battlefield up on Mackinaw Island that they turned into a golf course. I don't know if there is even a marker there anymore.

It was the only place to cross within about 500 miles of river. Whoever held the ford held the area around it. It's been a battlefield for a long time. Probably 10,000 years. The other part is the agriculture right there. De Anza said that the locals gave his party 3000 watermelons as they were on their way to Southern California. In the 1540s.

If you had room to carry the watermelons they were a pretty good deal out in the desert to come.

Wow! Very interesting and that makes a lot of sense about the strategic implications of the crossing. It also reminds me of a trip my parents and I took out to New York one time. We were driving down a road in the area of the Erie canal (the tourist site) and found ourselves on an old road along a very large ditch that had a well worn path next to it. We figured it had to be part of the original canal, but it had faded into somewhat obscurity much like your ford with the fancy bridges going right over top of it.

Ohhhh. How cool!

The bridges of the Colorado definitely took the strategic impact off of several places. This is now just a beautiful park that looks like anything but a serious battleground.

this is fantastic and i really love the holding back of history like i did lol
sam is the cutest pup ever. i really enjoyed seeing irl what this area looks like. thank you

I'm glad you like it. And I agree absolutely with your assessment of Sam. He got to meet his first horses today and he did just fine. We were back on the River Walk, but we went upstream a couple of miles.

Thanks!

Water Bridges Reflections and of course Sam you know I have to love this post ;)

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk tip!

Thanks man. As far as walks in general go, the river has to be one of our favorites. Sam seems to have finally figured out that you can't stick your nose in the water and take a sniff. He really is a desert doggy.

Thanks for the challenge. I really like it!

LOL @ Sam a slow learner perhaps LOL

A very interesting walk and some captivating photographs to go with it. All the best for the challenge.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh this is Great!!!! thank you for taking us all along with you!!!!!!

Glad to! Sam and I always have room for more on our walks. He'd like to talk the neighbor into going with us, but Cali is 13 and Linda is afraid she wouldn't be up to a romp in the desert...

Sam is indeed pretty cute @bigtom13! I bet he loved the streams, so much to drink right? I would imagine those bridges have seen quite a bit over the years. Beautiful day for a walk indeed :)

Yeah, the concept of walking in his water bowl is pretty foreign to him. Anything that floats he gets right after and snuffs and coughs every time.

That car bridge has a name. The Ocean to Ocean bridge. It was the first bridge across the Colorado for other than railroad traffic, and united the two coasts of America by road.

That water looks surprisingly clean. Is it always like that? Do people swim there? Rivers that are in or close to the cities are usually polluted but this one looks really nice. Oh, and, that first photo you took is absolutely amazing, I love how you captured the reflection of the sky 💚

The people of the Colorado actually take really good care of it. 40 million people get their drinking water from that river, and I'm one of them. So you are right. It's WAY more clean than most.

I think Sam and I are going to the river today. It's cool enough that I won't be standing in the river to repeat that photo :) I'll only get wet today from the sprinkles I get from Sam. And yes, there is lots of swimming around here. These pics were taken fairly early in the morning so the crowd was slim.
