Wednesday Walk Challenge Champagne Sports Resort, Drakensberg - Day one

We spent last week up at the foothills of the majestic Drakensberg mountain range, so I will take you on one of my late afternoon walks from our chalet at Champagne Sports Resort.
Our feathered friends the Ibis visited every day, searching for worms and scraps of food
We embarked on the 4 km trail down to the river late afternoon, but the sun was still high and it was very hot - we arrived in a heatwave.
A lovely surprise awaited - a herd of Impala grazing in the green grass and they were not even startled by us. We saw some Blesbuck a little further along but my photo sadly was too blurry to post.
A foot bridge takes one across to the golf course on the other side of the river, but we took the riverwalk which was a whole lot cooler.
On our way back we decided to look at the quaint little chapel just down the lane from our chalet.
A surreal photo I took through the chapel window - the reflection of the trees and everything on the outside really looks weird.

And then it was nightfall, time to head back to our chalet!

So many amazing pictures. I am not familiar with Drakensburg Mountains. Those are unbelievable, such majesty! What were those birds? Were you able to get very close to the Impalas? Facinating! Love the chalet, the front door was really beautiful. Great post @lizelle, sorry for so many questions ;)
The Drakensberg is a UNESCO world heritage Site, absolutely stunning. Besides the natural beauty there's rock paintings from the San people who lived there for 4 millennia. Higher up in the mountains the water is so pure one can drink it, crystal clear and icy cold!
The birds were Ibis, we stayed on the path so the buck carried on grazing, they must be used to hikers, I do think they'd be startled if we tried to get too close. We saw a bigger herd on our way back but they stood in the shade so could not get a clear photo of them. Our first two days were spent in a heat wave but from the third day it changed to icy cold, typical Drakensberg night time temperature so we had a fire going every night thereafter. Will do a follow up of our trip next week.
You would absolutely love it there, accommodation options range from super comfy to rugged backpacking for hikers or mountaineers where they overnight in caves or mountain huts, so it caters for everyone, unfit, us oldies;) to the super fit! Our chalet had all the mod cons, it's like a home away from home, just better. Friends joined us, we braaied (BBQ), had a pancake supper, played lots of Rummikub at night with lots of laughter, was such fun!

Wow! Is that ever a beautiful walk. That chapel is just stunning and your photographs make it so.
Sam and I got a little time in next to a golf course yesterday. We walked up a dry wash and through the whole development. He really wanted to go see what those people were doing, but managed to stay close.

That looks so beautiful, especially the cute chapel - it almost looks like a hobbit house! I've never seen an impala before. They look like small deer.
I loved the little chapel, the resort is a function venue as well so they have weddings there at times.
Impalas are quite common in the wild here, they're medium sized antelope.
