Wednesday Walk - within a couple of blocks of the office

Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by me, the idea being to get out for a short walk and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start. And this is my entry for this week, but first let me explain the challenge.

Wednesday walk challenge

Try and get out once a week for a short walk, can be from your office, home or anywhere really and walk for a few blocks or a few minutes looking for things to get shots of.

Try and get a few shots not just one

You can look for anything in generally or decide on one subject you want to get shots of.

Try to limit yourself to a set distance or time from the starting location, say 5 Blocks, 5 Minutes walk or whatever and see what you can find in that short distance

make a point of looking around and up and see what you can find to get shots of that otherwise you may miss

Do a post with the shots you get on a Wednesday and tag it with #wednesdaywalk, also if you happen to join it this week please leave a link to your post in a comment on this post and I will try and visit them all.

I am not strict on these rules and hence why they are called guidelines and not rules

For my Wednesday Walk post this week, this past week I haven't been out and about as much as normal for a variety of reasons including such grey weather but on Monday I managed to get out for a walk near my office in the city and got a few shots.

I walked down 2nd Ave and came to the Churchill Towers residential complex which has this cool Garden and statue out the front.

My stroll took me past this little fire station just off 2nd Ave, its a small little station for Engine 21 and just has room for one truck, I thought it was cool with the Fire Department of NY vehicle parked outside at the time.

By this stage of my walk I was up on 3rd Ave, and took a quick shot of this little stall/shop there are so many of these all around the city, and even though at this time no one was shopping there at the time but they do a lot of business, sometimes with queues of people.

Another site you often see is the Con Ed workmen such as here working under the streets and so often with steam rising out of the open manhole.

Parking is at a premium in the city, the parking garages are fairly expensive, so when people can find a spot on the street I would imagine is a bonus, I say Imagine as I never drive into the city I always take the train in.

So they make the most of any space available on the street such as this bike which the owner found a spot between these two cars,

Now its easy of course for the Motorcycles to get out of the gaps between the cars, but I feel for the owner of this car if they want to get out before the Motorcycles leave, I wonder what they do as there is no space at all to get out of the park without moving the bikes.

I hope a few of you may find this an interesting challenge and decide to join in.

I enjoyed your whole post! You got some very interesting photos. Next week I'll try to join in with this tag.

Thanks this was last minute for me this week look forward to seeing you joining in the future

Loving these shots mate, I can't wait for October when I'll be in NYC for a week. The last time I was in NYC I was only just starting to pick up a camera!

..and that fire station, is that the Ghostbusters fire station?

@fiftysixnorth You will have a blast in NYC there is so much to see and with your skills wit the camera I look forward to your posts after the visit

I am not sure if this is the Ghostbusters station but it easily could be :)

Thanks! We haven't quite planned what to see yet but i do have a list as long as my arm of things to do! I hope I don't disappoint with the shots I will come back with :)

I will definitely be looking for the ghostbusters fire station while i'm there :) This one really does look like it!

@fiftysixnorth i did some googling and the station used was Hook and Ladder 8 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firehouse,Hook%26_Ladder_Company_8

Thats awesome thanks :) definitely going on the list!

I will try and get there sometime as well :)

That would be cool, let me know if you do, I'd love to see the results!

I will try to remember to tag you when or if I do :)

Interesting shots all typical of NYC. Must be a lot of dented motorcycles with flat tires in Manhattan.

@manorvillemike Actually I havent noticed many bikes with dents in my walks but i would not be surprised at all if that happens

I wonder how many bikes get wheeled into the middle of the road and left for the owners to sort out. Oooops

I bet that has happened often, I have seen one moved the car pulled out and then they moved it back but I am sure there are other times when they just leave them as you say

Thanks for joining and I have to say I much prefer the area for your walk from mine :)

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)

You used to have to prove that you had a parking spot in New York City before they would let you register a car. When you think about it, that was actually pretty smart. I guess it also helped those that didn't have one go unregistered. :)

Such a lovely stroll after all that gray. The shopping that pops up has long been handy, albeit sometimes a little cluttered but that parking spot really takes the cake.

I am taking this home with me.

Tip!

@dswigle WOW that something I never knew, I guess as I never had a car while living in NYC

Thanks so much for your support

@dswigle Thanks for joining the walk just saw your post such a beautiful walk

You used to have to prove that you had a parking spot in New York City before they would let you register a car.

This is a requirement here in our country. You cannot register your car if you don't have parking area. However, all you have to do is show a picture and it will never be verified anyway so can just show a picture of any empty spot and say it is your parking area.

This photo reminds me so much of New York with the steam rising. Great shots @tattoodjay

And here is my entry for today's #wednesdaywalk

Ohh yes the steam rising will always make me think of NYC

Thanks off to visit your post now :)

It's a kind of iconic image. It's been in so many movies and really makes you feel like the city is alive and breathing.

@molometer thats such a great way to describe it :)
