I am moved, by the scene before me, stirring that place in my heart. There are no words for the sight and sound, the rhythm of horses hooves, the lump in my throat and the weight on my chest, but I watch the orange leaves glisten in the morning sun, as I watch the fallen join the fallen. Because it is too hard to do anything at this moment, except to wait for the breeze to blow it all away.

Arlington National Cemetery was, initially, a big middle finger to Robert E. Lee

Arlington National Cemetery is built on the house grounds of Arlington House, a 19th-century mansion owned by Civil War general Robert E. Lee’s wife, Mary Anna. General Lee loved this home and served as a custodian of the property. But after Virginia seceded from the union, the property was overrun by federal troops. When Mary Anna couldn’t pay a $92.70 property tax in person, the federal government snatched it, selling it to a tax commissioner for government use. To make the house completely uninhabitable in case the Lee family ever returned, Brig. Gen. Montgomery C. Meigs turned the property into a military cemetery for Union soldiers and a community for freed slaves. The Lee family never returned to their beloved home but 18 years later, their oldest son Custis sued for the property and the Supreme Court handed it back to him stating it had been taken without due process. The federal government eventually bought the land back from Custis in 1883 for $150,000.

Life is so Fleeting.

To stand in any National Cemetery always and forever takes my breath away. The amazing number of souls who have served our country is absolutely staggering.

Gather your feelings
Hide them in the clouds
Until the weight of time
Has blown them away
Forever

Somewhere along the line of life, setting suns, snowfalls and singing in the rain took on a new meaning to me. There have always been birds, filling the air with song, except now – I can hear the words. Oh, yes, I can. Yes, I can. Oh, yes, I really can… I listen carefully, ever so, just in case the angel starts singing along.

A piece of my day today.... it was gorgeous, albeit, a tad brisk. Sort of like an iced tea on a winter day.... Brisk and not as refreshing as one would believe.. Now, it is raining on me... Hey, Mother Nature... let's not get carried away.

They want to be picked. They yearn to be loved. Shouldn't we all want to be? There must be a flower. Always a flower.

Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

I always think of your images from Arlington as being quite bittersweet. Very beautiful yet painfully sad.

Thanks for the history lesson about Arlington! That is very interesting.

The enormity of the sacrifices denoted by the endless markers are so staggering and overwhelming.

Your photo mid way through of the yellow and orange leaves is just perfect. So bright and colorful, they actually look like flames!

Is that the Air Force Memorial in the photo near the end? I like those shapes perfectly framed by the two trees.

Outstanding post Denise.

You nailed it pretty well. So peaceful, I find solace walking among the canopy of trees, touching the stones and sending a prayer into the wind. The history there is actually staggering. There is so much, I could do a post a day on different parts of history!

And yes, there are some that are painfully sad. But, for the most part, the place overwhelms me to the point that I don't actually think while I am there and just carry it all home for me to sort out.

That is the Air Force Memorial, albeit a pretty bad shot of it. ;) I couldn't get a clear shot and I was too cold to walk all the way over there! Thank you for stopping over and leaving such a thoughtful comment.

Enjoy your day and stay creative!
Botty loves you. <3

Trees match cemeteries. I saw beautiful trees there ... I also learned, because of you about the Arlington Cemetery. I did not know that the place belonged to General Lee.
In childhood I liked General Lee, I don't know why ... still, he was from the south, so on the bad side.

It was an insult to take his home and bury the soldiers there. You know war is usually ugly.

I am a Northerner. :)

Hi, Dan! It is a cool day today and tomorrow there might even be an inch of snow! Holy Mother of God... :)

It will last an hour and then melt, but still!!!

!tip

Thanks! I am a Northerner too! So I remember now ... General Grant and Lee. I hope not to mistaken. War is horrible ...
I expect some snow, it's announced, but it doesn't always happen.
It's possible to go to Transylvania next week and I think I will meet the winter there.
