March ProgBlog #2: was this where the rail was?

in #aer5 years ago

I fell so far off the track I'm not sure I'll be able to find it again, maybe it was a cliff I plummeted off? Who thought building a railroad through this kind of territory was a good idea?

Guess I'll just have to make yet another one. Again. There's probably a perfectly good plain not far away that would have made for a much easier journey too.

In tonight's work in progress shot I'm working on shadow 3 of frame 4, featuring my scribbly placeholder writing which was laid out before I knew that I was going to do this twisty perspective run on nightmarish thing with the buildings. The first two frames/sections went more or less according to plan and then after the third frame I've been changing text placement on the fly. It's been working out so far.

Though the graffiti took a ridiculously long time to do. I'm not good at text. I originally tried to draw it in place but ended up just writing everything flat and then transforming it into place. I hope it's legible when it's shrunk :S

For anyone wondering why my buildings are covered in plants, over where my characters live most buildings are covered in plants and a lot of urban plants are bioluminescent because it worked out to be cheaper and better for the environment to use bioluminescence as street lighting instead of electric lights. There are still indoor electric lights because the plants will only light an area really well if they're really big or there's a lot of them.

I've noticed while poking around in my head universe that grass doesn't seem to come in bioluminescent (or perhaps I just haven't seen any yet). I wonder why.

This post also appears on my blog and Patreon.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) It can be one of your characters (including ones you make up on the spot for this XD) or a self insert. There's a bunch of different human types to choose from, and pets/other animals are also welcome.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Looking good and, impossible is nothing.

Impossible just takes longer and occasionally some assistance 😆

Thanks 😄

Bioluminescence is the way forward!

I don't use them often but when I do, I only use bioluminescent condoms.

"The way forward - and backward."

Shining a light no matter how dark the path!! :0D

@meeterboom I just use bioluminescence paint on my giant dog when he is going for his night run on the Devon Moors... ;)

It’s a great use of genetic engineering! 😆

I like the interesting perspectives you are using. You really have your work cut out for on this project.

Thanks! They were nightmare even with 3d bases so I hope they work out well in the end ^_^;

The graffiti looks awesome so the time was well spent!

Comics are and seem like SO much work, so good on you @ryivhnn

I'm sure you've shown it before, but do you storyboard it all out in just 'pencil' sketch with boxes and where dialogue will go?

I like the idea of having someone ask to be put into the comic, that's a kind of cool idea.

For these things I have a plan and occasionally like now some layout stuff goes out the window XD

For actual comics I'll storyboard the lot though my writing will always be scribbly as hell, and I'll usually find I need a bit less room than initially thought as my scribbly writing is very big.

This comic thingi is actually a distraction from the main project which is an animation ^_^;

ps on the crowd cameos thing, well I had to make crowd characters anyway so they may as well be people I know and therefore fun to do ;D

I find the twisty nightmarish building angles pretty cute, it reminds me a lot of Lovecraft stories which I like :D.

Bio luminescence plant sounds pretty great, and I like that you think about little details like that. It adds a lot of charms to the world that you are creating :).

You haven’t seen the nightmarish building angles in all their nightmare inducing glory, my sister reckoned the twisty perspective from hell was giving her a headache when I showed her the full thing 😳😆 hopefully observing it in sections won’t hurt the brain so much? 🤣

Don’t think it’s too lovecraftian otherwise 😆 yay thanks nice to hear my overthinking is occasionally good 🙃

That looks like a very complicated proceedure @ryivhnn An IT engineering degree would come in handy......but you've obviously got a handle on it and know exactly what the outcome will be. Very interesting......

I've actually done IT (just as a job not as a degree) and it doesn't help at all XD

Are you finding the program complicated looking? Once you're familiar with the layout (which I modified slightly so this isn't even the normal/vanilla layout) it's not too bad, and if you're familiar with layering on analogue artwork then you're most of the way there (though again I probably have a bizarro way of doing things because the joys of learning by stuffing around XD).

Glad you find it interesting :D

I'm still in kindergarten when it comes to IT. I've had to really extend myself since becoming involved in steemit. So yes.....one look at your program and I go cross eyed. I love to see what you can digitally and artistically create. It is just so different to what I am used to.

If it's any consolation I feel exactly the same watching analogue artists at work or seeing their results. Like, how do you do all that I don't understand how these mediums get those results and how do you cope without undo kinda thing XD

That's what makes life interesting. It would be boring if we were all adept at the same things. The way I cope with crappy digital results is to not let them see the light of day. That is the down side of digital effects. It's a hit and miss process. Sometimes I include an image I'm not that keen on and then get encouraging remarks about them.

We all view art differently.
