I built an Anarchist dating site. Is it really the sausage fest you think it is?

in #anarchy8 years ago

One boring evening, I scrolled past a post on facebook calling for an anarchist dating site -- by a woman, none the less. Most of the responses were based on the idea that such a site would be pointless, unless you're gay, because sausage fest.

Well, being a designer/developer, I decided to take on the task and see if said site would be the penis-onslaught we all feared it would be.

After 10 days of continuous work, it was ready. Enter https://anarchy.love

30 Days Out. The Numbers..

One prominent name in the liberty movement threw out a 1:20 male:female guess before the site launch. Fortunately, it's not that bad.

  • 1:7 female:male ratio
  • 845 Total Members
  • 653 messages sent & received
  • 6,700 total unique visitors

I allow members to specify their political/philosophical affiliations (multiple selections enabled):

  • 388 Voluntaryists
  • 371 Anarcho-Capitalists
  • 298 Anarchists
  • 273 Libertarians
  • 196 Agorists
  • 41 Panarchists
  • 27 Mutualists
  • 22 Anarcho-Primitivists
  • 15 Anarcho-Communists
  • 12 Anarcho-Syndicalists

The Major Issue is Numbers, Not Gender

The 1:7 female:male ratio is only an issue if the member base is low. When you consider other niche dating sites like FarmersOnly have hundreds of thousands of users, 845 isn't going to cut it.

So does the anarchy/liberty movement have the numbers to sustain a successful dating website? Are there enough anarchists and liberty-minded individuals at all?

I'd like to think I'm just bad at marketing, so here I am Steemit. Here I am.

Being an anarchist of any gender makes for a hard love life - thank you for making this site I will check it out @dreamache

  • By the way @dreamache where are you based out of? If your ever anywhere near Boulder Colorado give me a shout - I'm organizing some steemit meetups for the city

Unfortunately I'm about an hour south of Cleveland OH. Thanks for the comment though.

Really? There's where i live back home lol but Mansfield

Damn - just went through the process of signing up for an account and there are no anarchists in Boulder - Ifeel real stupid

Bro, you're an early adopter then! The first in Boulder! Hold your head high!! ;)

This is very interesting, kudos for your work! I am impressed.

I honestly dont think it will be a self-running success, but with the right marketing in the right channels you could potentially draw a noteworthy userbase, and from there, who knows? This particular community, is one where word-of-mouth weighs a lot. Just my thoughts on the matter. Again, thanks for sharing your efforts and thoughts :)

Ty. I also think I may have to focus on slightly rebranding it with a focus on libertarians. There's definitely enough libertarians (the political, minarchist flavor) that could sustain a site possibly. And I don't think it's a huge compromise to date someone who's a libertarian, especially with the famous 6 month transition period between minarchist to anarchist in mind. ;)

My wife was a full blown Statist when we first started dating 4 years of planting seeds of Voluntaryism and she is now one of us. She still has a way to go but so do I. I have to admit I did not even know about Anarchism and Voluntaryism was 4 years ago.

I met my wife in high school and we've both changed quite a bit, and fortunately share similar ideologies now. Politically, we were both republicans because parents -- and then I got interested in Ron Paul, which led us both to anarchism.

One point of contention, albeit small, was religion. I was Christian, then agnostic, then atheist -- while my wife stayed Christian for some time. I would drop some objections and arguments here and there, and she always seemed dead-set against changing her theist position. Then one day, she seemed to open up about it out of no where, and now she's an atheist. Of course, this is no bash towards theists, but I think it's an interesting parallel to statist beliefs and the process of communicating these ideas to partners.

As you mentioned, it can take years and that's even with a person who's intelligent and open-minded.

That's why I think attempting to attract a person with closer ideals is always a safer bet. ;)

I just signed up for the site .. I am the older generation, by far... It is hard to be anything different least days and harder still to find like minds nearby. I hope Steemit will help.
