Had a Little Visitor Yesterday

in #animal6 years ago (edited)

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas where
we see a good variety of wildlife on four legs and on wings! Yesterday
out by one of our ponds we had a visit from an Armadillo. He totally
ignored us so we snapped some photos.

Couldn't get a good head shot so here is one from the Chattanooga
Times article about them invading East Tennessee in 2013.

Funny looking little critters ain't they? look kinda pre-historic to me.
Their head looks too small for their body. All the locals say to shoot
them whenever we see them but we haven't. When we first got this
place they were tearing the yard up something fierce with holes
everywhere, but they left when we cleared the bushes away.

These guys eat all manner of bugs, worms and insects and usually
come out at night, when I escort our dog outside at night I'll pick
up their beady little eyes sometimes out on the lawn.

There was also a rainbow behind the clouds, it was hard to get a
photo of but I think you can get the idea.

It was a great morning.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

This Comment is my 7777th post.

@ironshield

holy moly @ironshield! 7777...you deserve a reward for that! or do I deserve it?
no you deserve it of course. here is a dust vote! congratulations. how long did that
take.. 7 years? just teasing, you're awesome. I'm honored that it happened on my post!

I joined summer of last year... That means an average of 20 posts (comments) per day! @ironshield

that's a pretty impressive record considering how difficult it is to be that consistent!

Im glad it was your post! Thanks for the dust vote! Dust sweeper will not let that vote be in vain. @ironshield

Cute little guy

thank you Ma'am and I do hesitate to call them that because I'm a tough, rugged cowboy ya know. but they are kinda ...cute. thank you @empress-eremmy it's good to see you here, this joint needs some class.

What a terrible attitude to have towards one's fellow creatures. Good on ya not shooting the poor things.

howdy deirdyweirdy! so good to see you here. uh, well..they say that to me because they tear up people's yards really bad but they haven't bothered ours since we took away all the bushes from around the house. I just don't like to kill things like I used to. except snakes. they gotta die if they show up here. everything else is a blessing. and these little guys are kinda cute...I hesitate to say that word because I'm a rugged cowboy ya know. thank you for commenting and God bless Ireland!

I don't know if you have ginabot or if you're on discord at all, but I nominated you for support from @jaynie at #steemitbloggers and you were chosen! https://steemit.com/steemitbloggers/@jaynie/minnow-blog-support-initiative-no-11-my-latestupvote-additions

You're so awesome with your encouragement, I hoped you would get on the list. Thanks again for all of your support!

hey @byn! thank you so much! I don't have Ginabot but I just got the instructions on how to get her..and I tried awhile back to get on steemitbloggers but couldn't find Jaynie on discord so I couldn't connect, I contacted her some other way but never got a reply so thank you, you did it! you may have just gained a lifelong fan ...not sure..there are alot of good authors on steemit.
just teasing! lol. do I have to do anything? I don't seem to know how anything works on Steemit. I got new people asking and I'm like..I have no idea.. google it.
hey bythe way Byn, you're a word person, obviously. I put a word on my profile description that isn't even a real word I don't think anyway, but no one has caught it. I don't know if people actually read those but I do. anyway thanks so much! you're the best! can't wait to go into Barnes and Nobles and buy your books.
plus you have a husband that can fix anything, that's the perfect combination!

No worries! It took me a ridiculously long time to get the hang of this place. It's like a new world with it's own language sometimes!

Just keep writing quality posts! I wouldn't be surprised if you see an invite to #steemitbloggers at some point! You're a great writer, you write unique posts and you're more engaged than most on here!

hey there Byn... I must say that I respectfully question your assessment if you say that I'm a great writer! I'm a pretty decent commenter but what is that? lol. I am engaged more than most that is true but when "most" can't put a comprehensible sentence together I don't feel a great sense of accomplishment from that! lol.
having said that..I thank you sincerely and pray for you guys when I think about it. I will try to do good posts and that would be nice to get an invite!

bytheway..as I self indulge for a second..have you heard of Asher's Engagement League?

I haven't heard of Asher's Engagement League...

(And you have to trust my judgement, I'm very clever and a good judge of people.)

lol! ok @byn I have confidence in your judgement, I mean think of all the experience you have in life, you been through things that few of us have.

hey I asked before if you still had issues with the multiple thing, is that something that you don't talk about? which is fine of course, I was just curious to know how people deal with that type of thing.

I as well have never seen one in person...thanks for sharing!

thank you sir @simms50! isn't this place the most educational one in the world?
everyday it;s like goin to school. thank you sir!

Oh yeah...I have seen and learned a lot while being here!

Awe, look at that little guy or is it gal? Nice pics!

howdy there @squirrelbait! yes he or she is, I have no idea and don't want
to know. As long as they keep a safe distance and don't dig holes in the yard
to find worms, we'll get along fine. thank you squirrelbait!
heading over to your post later.

You really have an interesting backyard @janton. I have seen a collection of animals so far that come visiting. Thank you for the post on the Armadillo. They are quite amazing animals.

howdy here @angiemitchell! well thank you Ma'am. It IS very interesting because we
never know what is going to show up. it ain't a paradise like your backyard and I doubt
if we have any fairys but it will do and we're thankful.

They are not common here, besides the holes, I understand they can carry leprosy. One of the few animals that can.

I gave a good friend who immigrated from Mexico, who told me that GOD made armadillos, so Mexicans would have something to eat on a half shell! He is a Mess for sure! He is also a vegetarian, so I don't know if I can believe him anyway!

:)

lol! that's great!
but the leprosy? kill them! kill them all!
but don't you have to touch leprosy for it to be caught?
so they should be fine, on one's going to touch them.

Cook them well, if you are eating them on the half shell....
:D

lol! they just don't look like good eatin!

Oh, I don't know; after you get past the gag reflex, they are tasty, I'm sure. :)

lol! yeah ya gotta find them too, I rarely see them.

You need to be a better hunter, LOL! :D

well I would need a nice scope because they're usually quite a ways off.

Hi there, how you doing @janton ? Great post indeed.
This is the first time I am seeing this animal and it looks different but beautiful as any other creature could be, Thank you for introducing this to us.

howdy again @hananali! oh you liked it? I thought maybe you'd want to shoot it like my neighbors told me to!
They are nice little critters if they aren't digging your yard up! and they have that covering which is very tough and hard like bone so that helps them survive against predators like coyotes.

Yes i did, shoot it? who wanted it? why would any want to shoot any creature ? I assume you meant shot not shoot lol , were your neighbors scared of it ?
Their covering looks more like tortoise to me, keep one with you may be, but keep it away from your yard

lol! hananali! I was teasing you about shooting the armadillo. we shoot things all the time around here. lots of stuff like snakes, they gotta die. protecting Jack:
jack (1).jpg

the reason the neighbors shoot them is because it's the only way to stop them from destroying their lawns, their grass, they tear up a lawn something fierce with large holes all over.
they also shoot all the coyotes they can because they kill their chickens and dogs so they're protecting their ranch and family members.

oh, I thought they were scared of it just as snakes or something they would shoot, if its about saving family members then its fine i guess, and its frustrating if something destroys your lawn, you work hard on it.
How about mike? doing good?

anything that threatens the family has to die.
do you mean Jack our German Shepard?
if so, he's doing great, just came in from playing frisbie with him, he's kinda hot!

I agree, family and it's safety first. He plays frisbie ? That's cool . May be it's just common for dogs but it's new for me because I never had one. But , will love seeing them playing

howdy hananali, you never had a dog or never had a frisbie?

Armadillos are a prehistoric hoot! I laugh every time I see one shoot off like a rocket when they are startled. They jump and climb trees too. Fun post. 🐓🐓

oh thank you @mother2chicks...I didn't know they climbed trees! I suppose our Texas variety do that as well. I know some types roll up in a ball and pull in like a turtle. I didn't know Florida had these guys too. seems like the gators would eat em. lol
