"....but not us...."

in #avengers5 years ago

Yes I know I'm a little late to the party here, but the life of a senior electrical engineering student attending a major university is absolute madness. I've barely spoken to anyone outside my roommates for the past 4 days...spending an average of 10-12 hours a day completing various school-related tasks. However, this breakdown simply could not wait any longer. I have been itching to talk about this 30-second gem of a trailer for almost a week now. After I sat down and really dove into this trailer, I soon realized...as many of you probably have...that this trailer potentially revealed WAY more than a T.V. spot normally should.

Allow me to explain.

The Secret Lies Within the First 2 Seconds

So this short-lived teaser starts off by rapidly flashing scenes of various "snapped" heroes from previous movies. They seem to be in random order at first...but upon closer inspection, you would notice that the order in which these heroes are flashed are the reverse-order in which they died in Infinity war...with The Wasp being first, and Vision being last. This could represent the reversal of the snap, or even the heroes going back in time...or perhaps reversing time itself. Besides the order of the flashing memories, there are also a few other curious details to note about them. Perhaps the most noticeable thing about these pics is the monochrome color pallet they used, with the only color not desaturated being red. This matches the "Marvel Stud10s" logo color scheme, but I think the meaning goes a little deeper. After all, marvel has a history of hiding messages in plain sight within their trailers, and I can't imagine they wouldn't do the same here...especially considering the limited trailer time they have. The red and grey could mean a few things:

  • The color pallet looks oddly similar to these leaked Avengers: Endgame toys that depict the "Quantum Suits" the team wears when inevitably traveling into the quantum realm:

this could be a little nod to the reality-bending we are about to witness due to the journey into the quantum realm!

  • Red is the color of the reality stone, and this I think is no coincidence. This could signify that the reality stone will play a direct role in the outcome of this film, or that, again, multiple realities/the quantum realm will play a big role. My bet is that some combination of both will be what ends up determining the fate of our heroes.

It also should be noted that each scene depicts the defining moments for each respective hero in this film universe. The Wasp receiving her suit, Fury in the first Avengers, Spider-Man landing with Cap's shield, Dr. Strange throwing on his cape, Falcon in Civil War, Wanda defending Vision, The first time The Guardians teamed up, Black Panther becoming King of Wakanda, Bucky catching cap's shield (perhaps alluding to him replacing Steve as Captain America??), and Vision defeating Ultron after Ultron tells him that he has seen the future and humanity is doomed. These are all scenes that define these heroes and all of their motives up until this point (as well as future motivations) can all be traced back to these scenes. Marvel chose these scenes specifically, and only time will reveal the real reason.

Cap goes to AA (Avengers Anonymous)

This trailer confirmed yet again that this movie will deal heavily with the psychological and physical effects of losing half of all life in the universe, and more specifically...how captain america is taking the whole situation. If the first two trailers are to be believed...he seems to not be taking it very well at all. We see a broken and depressed Steve Rogers in what looks like a group therapy session with who I can only imagine to be a group of surviving avengers, humans, or possibly both? Either way it looks like he will be talking it out. It also could be the same place he first formally met Falcon...where he was also leading group therapy sessions for veterans. This would explain why Cap looks so distressed in this scene. Or maybe he just has a REALLY annoying piece of spinach between his teeth...but I'm definitely leaning towards the crumbling sanity angle. "Some people move on..." he says, "...but not us.". I know I'm not the only one with chills right now.

It should also be noted that before we see Cap in his group therapy session, we get a few quick shots of New York in (what I assume) is it's current state, and lemme say...it doesn't look pretty. At all. There seems to be a very dark blue/grey tint to the world, and a permanent haze seems to have descended over it. There is also what looks like a bunch of (abandoned?) boats floating along the bays of New York, and I can only guess that they are the empty vessels of the victims. Dark stuff man. This movie is really gonna be a gut punch.

10.PNG

Nebula + Tony Stark = Iron Nebula??

We then get another series of quick shots from the film...all new this time...and some are VERY interesting indeed. The shot that no one seems to be talking about though is the very first one after Cap says "not us". The one with Tony and nebula going to WORK on some project. To me, this was probably the most intriguing shot of the whole trailer. The first thing I noticed was that the arc reactor is somehow back in Tony's chest (you can see the glow from under his shirt...a nice throwback to the first film), and I can only guess that he does this to sustain his vitals and potentially survive longer in space. Although I don't know why he needed the reactor back in his chest to do this. It's quite perplexing. It reminds me of the cave escape in the first film, and I think that is what the Russo brothers are aiming for here. Like I said...this movie is gonna hit where it hurts. I then questioned what exactly they could be working on, and I am gonna assume its another suit...but this time instead of the man emerging from the cave, Tony will hand the torch off to Nebula and she will don a hybrid iron-man suit and be the one to escape. What makes me think this? If you look closely, it looks like nebula is actually digging into her own body for parts while tony is soldering the parts she has already harvested.

14.PNG

15.PNG

This is a nice throwback to Infinity war when Thanos said Nebula was "a waste of parts". There's also this leaked photo of a toy that is supposed to be released after the film.

It's a blue iron man suit, and for the longest time, theorists thought it might be donned by Pepper Pots coming to rescue Tony in space...but after seeing this trailer I can almost confirm that Nebula will be the one wearing it. Notice how the helmet Tony uses to record his message to Pepper in the first trailer is so torn up. At first, people thought it was the torn-up suit from Infinity War, but that doesn't make sense because that suit was Nano-tech. He must have found out how to turn the Nano-suit into a permanent version, or he somehow gained access to an older model of one of his suits. Either way, you can see that he clearly tore into this one pretty good to make Nebula's suit. Tony saved some of the helmet for himself so he could keep an audio journal for Pepper after he died. Gut punch #34521.

After this short scene, we cut to Steve, Natasha, Banner, and War Machine walking out from Avengers headquarters and looking up at the sky in amazement/anticipation/confusion. This could be a few things...namely Nebula in her blue Iron Man suit, Thor (& Rocket?), or a new alien threat. What is in the sky isn't what sparked my interest in this shot, however. It is that rather large gap between Bruce and War Machine. Marvel is clearly editing someone out of the shot here. Someone we aren't supposed to see. Some people have said it's Iron Man, but given that he is starving out in space...this probably isn't the case. My guess is that it's Captain Marvel, and when Nebula describes the dire situation Tony finds himself in, she will race out into space to save him. I could be very wrong, but what I do know is that Marvel is definitely hiding something here.

16.PNG

We then see rocket opening a wooden door in what looks like coastal territory. He could be with Thor here...which would be very plausible because those are the two characters with literally nothing left to lose. He could be elsewhere though. This matches up with the shots we see shortly after of Thor in some wooden shack. Some have said that Thor could have exiled himself...but that doesn't seem like Thor to me. The much better fitting theory, in my opinion, is that Thor and Rocket are hunting down Thanos together, and that Thor is actually at Thanos's little lake house we see him smiling in at the end of Infinity War. Thanos has apparently is long gone though...judging by the look on Thor's face (Anger, disappointment, and anguish).

Another very curious and surprising shot makes its way into this trailer in the form of a Hawkeye shot. He seems to be good ol' Hawkeye again, and he seems to be looking up in awe into something glowing red. Again, red seems to be a common theme in this trailer, as well as the film, and I am REALLY curious to find out the reason why. Is he looking at an infinity stone? Maybe it's the reality stone in the form of the "ether" that we saw in Thor: The Dark World? Whatever it is, it seems to have a spellbinding effect on Hawkeye. Also is it just me, or does it look like there's a body sprawled across the rubble behind him?

23.PNG

The Final scenes and the REAL Money Shot

Even though the trailer is only 30 seconds long, it seems MUCH longer. I know that I personally felt like I had been chewed up and spit out emotionally. Nothing encapsulates this emotional anguish more than seeing Cap's bloodied and beaten hand struggle to tighten the straps on his original shield. Yes...I said the ORIGINAL shield. At these glorious panels flashed across the screen, I realized that this was the first time we had seen the shield since Cap dropped it at Tony's feet in Civil War. Also, keep in mind that the model he used in that film was an updated version of the original one used in The First Avenger. That one had leather straps...and the updated versions had magnetic attachments. He is clearly using the original model, which excites me...but also perplexes me. They are clearly going to be playing with time and alternate realities here. As for where this scene takes place within the film...I think it could possibly happen during the climactic battle between the avengers and whoever the big bad of this film will be. Most think it will be Thanos...and that would be the obvious choice...but leaks and reports have stated that there could be an even bigger threat in this film. Either way cap is tightening that shield for a reason. He can't be flinging it around...he needs it for protection. This excites me but also leaves me concerned about Cap's fate. I just really hope they give him a fitting ending, if that's the route they choose to go. I think it will be.

Welp

24.PNG

25.PNG

26.PNG

Up until this point in the trailer, we hadn't heard any dialogue other than cap's opening statement about people moving on. After the tightening-of-the-straps scene, the trailer cuts to black and we hear cap's voice echo...

"...not us..."

Then we see a familiar shot of a team of Avengers walking across the hangar in the Avenger's headquarters. They are most likely off to see that "plan" (that they emphasized in the first trailer) through.

27.PNG

Now I say this shot is "familiar" because we have seen it before in the first trailer...although there weren't any heroes walking in that one. Also the camera was moving in the opposite direction. Now I think this very well could simply be Marvel playing with us through their trailers (which they have done before), or I think it could be another clue pointing towards them playing around with realities. What I think would be really cool, is if as the camera follows them walking...they actually disappear into the quantum realm, Back to the Future style. Then perhaps later in the film, the camera would return to that same spot and move the opposite direction...or maybe it would do so to signify the reversal of time or some other event. Regardless, I think this is the REAL money shot of the trailer, as opposed to cap tightening his straps. I mean to me, the REAL money shots of the trailer came in the first few moments...but that wasn't new footage, so this will have to take the prize.

Final Thoughts

This trailer packed a WHOLE LOT into 30 seconds. More than I think anyone really realizes. Marvel always does that with their trailers though. You go back after watching the film and wonder how they managed to show something like that without giving the whole dang movie away. I honestly would be okay with them not showing any more footage until the movie releases, but I if I had to place a bet, it would be on them releasing one more full-length "action" trailer to appease the angry fanboys who will inevitably demand to see more. If that happens, then expect to see another breakdown of that one!

Until then...

Sort:

ǝɹǝɥ sɐʍ ɹoʇɐɹnƆ pɐW ǝɥ┴

Whew... great breakdown! I didn’t read the full details of one fan theory floating around out there... perhaps you have, but I saw speculation that the “misdirection” clip of Hulk charging into battle in Wakanda (when the final film instead had Bruce in the Hulkbuster armor) from the original Infinity War trailer could actually be a shot from Endgame! Again, this would explore time travel or alternate realities to reshape the conflict that had occurred.

Oh yes I've definitely read that theory! I think that it's true as well! I think that we will see multiple realities in this film (alluded to by Dr. Strange) and that we will see that exact shot in endgame!

One of my daughters is a MARVEL (crazy) fan and loved the post (not that I did not).
I admire the patience and dedication of those who can do what you have done.
That's exactly what we do with literary analysis, only we do it with words, you do it with images.
I'd ratehr be surprised by the marvel guys. The thing about their unvierse is that it is so vast and complex that literally anything can happen.

I'm so glad to hear you guys liked the article! I try my hardest to combine words with images to break these trailers down! It takes a great deal of patience to hunt these pictures and theories down! Thank you so much for the support :)
