Market Friday: the best shop for Thai silk in Nongkhai,

in #busy5 years ago

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the incredibly nice and aimiable @dswigle. This is my introduction to the best place to buy Thai silk in Nongkhai. This shop belongs to the owner of a local well known designer who has a shop selling specially designed jewelry and gold cases for Buddha amulets.

This silk shop is right next door to this jewelry shop. Besides a large collection of antique silk cloth on display, it also has a very good dress-maker who works very hard to please all customers. I like to check out the selection of linen and cotton shirts, including cotton hats. The owner uses real antiques for decoration inside his shop. Naga or the Water Snake is wideky revered by local people and his statues can be found in houses, temples and shops.

Those hand-woven silk cloth on displayed on the wall are very rare and in perfect condition. These are, of course, very expensive as they have become collectors’ items. Some patterns are mostly old local designs which could not be reproduced nowadays as those weavers were all too old or no longer alive. The really expensive piece will have thin gold thread wovened in the designed patterns. So, this shop has become a museum of traditional and antique silk cloth, with an exhibition of beautiful contemporary fashions with an Eastern influence.

Even the spirit house has been specially designed by the owner so that it is not in the usual red colour.

Lots of decorating flowers there too!
There are also imported laces from Italy,France and Japan. They do tailored clothes for clients and for wedding as well.

I cannot even begin to tell you how beautiful the shop is! It is like walking into a museum for silk! I must admit that I was mesmerised by the water snake that you had pictured there and although I am not fond of snakes, this one was absolutely spectacular the way they had made him with cold tail or bronze and his head also. It was just simply beautiful!

A hand-woven silk that was displayed, I am sure was very very expensive, especially with the gold thread woven through the designed patterns. It is absolutely Exquisite and I can remember just touching it and knowing that it was very expensive. I would like to come and shop for some antique silk so that I could make something of it.

Such very beautiful patterns and colors. The imported laces would interest me also. When I was in Italy and France I bought some and have finally run out. So now I sometimes cut up an old wedding dress that I find in the thrift shop and use the lace from that. It really works pretty well. I want to thank you for making such a unique post and taking the time to photograph it and write a post. It is very much appreciated. And as always I hope you have a very peaceful week ahead!

#MarketFriday loves you!

Thank you very much for such a nice comment and a tip too!

I am so glad you like Thai silk and antique silk as well. I have a few friends who collect old and rare Thai silk. Sometimes they travel to the provinces in search of some old families who still woven silk cloth. Several villages still grow their own silk worms and use their traditional patterns in weaving.

I am always amazed by their patience and dedication in their creation.

Thank you very much for your support.

Wishing YOU a very peaceful and restful weekend :)))

my grandma always told me how special silk is to her, so your post brings me great memories

Thank you very much! I am glad to hear that! I wasn’t quite sure what to write about this post earlier. My Chinese grandma was very fond of old style Chinese trousers. So, subconsciously I bought a few pairs of this old style Chinese silk trousers. These are no longer in vogue and they are quite difficult to find. Older generations of weavers mostly passed away by now.

Have a wonderful weekend too!
