#musicdiscovery 3SBD giveaway - 80s music suggestions

in #contest6 years ago

Hello Steemians and fellow music lovers!

Time to announce the winner from last weeks 2SBD giveaway - thanks so much for all the entries it has given me lots of new music to listen to.

Drumroll please….. and the winner is @antimetica

Thank you so much for introducing me to Rush, and band I have heard of in the past but never listened to. I have listened to the debut album and really enjoyed it - pure rock n roll - the singer has a killer voice too - similar to Robert Plant! I enjoy bands like Motley Crue and Van Halen and the first album had a similar sound in a couple of songs - but with more of a progressive rock twist. I will be listening to more of their music for sure! Thanks so much 2SBD is on its way to you.

Also I had some good upvotes on this post so I am also going to give 0.2SBD for all those who participated - check your wallets!

As you can probably guess by the title of this post I am also going to have another giveaway - this time upping the prize to 3SBD. After listening to Rush (although they formed in 1968 they have a very 80s sound), I realised I do really like 80s music, but my knowledge is very limited. So to go into the draw all you have to do is comment and share an 80s band you think I might enjoy (I like any type of music really!), and I will pick the best answer and award 3SBD. Upvoting/resteeming is not necessary but would still be appreciated

As you will see from my examples below my interest in 80s music is definitely more the mainstream artists:

Bon Jovi is an artists I really love! Good for long road trips and karaoke, as there are a lot of really classic singalongs! Heres one of there MANY classics, 'Wanted dead or alive'

Queen are not only one of my favorite 80s bands but also one of my favorite bands of all time. Freddie Mercury had a unique voice that hasn't been matched. Hard to pick one Queen song to share but ‘I want to break free’ is not only classic but also shows Freddies more extravagant side:

Motley Crue is another band I loved from the 80s - so cheesy now looking back but still so good! Classic hair metal! I have also read their autobiography ‘The Dirt’, co written with Neil Strauss, which is probably the best book ever written about rock n roll. The dirt is also being made into a movie which I cannot wait for! The song ‘Kickstart my Heart’ is written by bass player Nikki Sixx and is a reference to when he overdosed on heroin and then shot up again as soon as he got out of hospital!

I’m a hip hop head bro, so you know I have to deliver some hip hop tunes.

I was born early 80s, so much of the 80s artist I don’t remember listening to much. Hip hop wasn’t always this widely accepted every where. My moms was not tryna hear me jamming LL cool J, “momma said knock you out”.

I’m sure you’ve heard of EPMS, Eric B. & Rakim, and Public Enemy. All hip hop legends. Then theres the artist (or group) that makes a splash hit but kind of fall off the face of the earth.

Ever heard of Audio Two? Maybe their name doesn’t ring a bell, but maybe you remember their hit record “Top Billing”. Top Billing was the Brooklyn based duo (Milk Dee & Gizmo) 1987 smash hit, and one of my all time personal favorites.

Cool thanks will be getting onto these for sure! Thanks! Good to have some 80s hip hope for something different eh!

Here's a couple:

• New Order - their mid-80's albums Low-Life and Brotherhood still rank among my all time favorites.

• Depeche Mode - likely you've heard of them already. You have heard of them, correct? 😎

And here's a one-off project by Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten. World Destruction - Time Zone

Quite prophetic, if you ask me...

New Order I have never listened to - thanks!

Yeah I only know them because Marilyn Manson did a cover of Personal Jesus - never got much past that haha.

Haha wow! Tha song was, well interesting!

I have to second New Order. And just can't get enough de peche mode haha

Thanks. Maybe New Order is on my list for today then :)

Hellooooo thank you so much for the .2SBD I was actually surprised when I saw my wallet lol. Anyway my boyf actually likes the new wave genre and I can't help but listen along. 😄 I actually asked him for some suggestions on some bands you can listen to. Here's a list:

  • Tears for Fears (he recommends this band the most since it's his fave 😅 )
  • A-ha
  • The Smiths
  • The Police

Here are some of my personal recommendations although I think you're aware of them by now:

  • Poison
  • Warrant
  • Mr. BIG (late 80s but omg my heart still skips a beat watching them lol)
  • FireHouse

I hope you enjoy listening to them!

No problems - as I said the post got a bigish upvote so thought id share it around with those who participate.

Thanks for the indepth list im familiar with - Poison (I actually saw them live a few years back as a supporting band!) and The Police. The others im not so familiar with so will check them out !

Thanks for your answer I really appreciate it :)

Happy to help! ;) Enjoy!

I really like this song from White Lion. I heard it first when a cover of it was sent to me by a man who I was dating. He died unexpectedly two months in, but he introduced me to the band with this song.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is a must for 80's blues! Start with Texas Flood and venture out from there.

Thanks! I have a friend who is really into Stevie Ray Vaughan I only know the popualr songs so might have to delve back in and give it a better listen! Cheers :)

Try a little Johnny Winter and BB King while you're on that thread!

BB King is brilliant eh! I know a bit of Johnny Winter but not alot!

Wow awesome thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed Rush. Some people do not like them and find Geddy's vocals not their style but I dig it. Their first album is pretty heavy. Later ones are more intricate and complex musically and lyrically. Neil Peart writes all the lyrics and he delves into mythology, social issues, fantasy and apocalyptic scenes. Their earlier 70s stuff is fun to watch on youtube in one performance they wear white kimonos.

Speaking of Queen I still watch the Live Aid clip on Youtube (it's always listed in someone's top 10 of best rock concert moments). I just love them so much. Did you see the Paul Rogers concert with him and Queen? I thought it was pretty good. No one is Freddie but Paul's voice has its own quality that seemed to be right for the songs.

80s music... well that was my days so I have a lot of favorites. I'm not sure you like synths and electronic and that was really my goto in the 80s and as far as rock others have recommended some great bands.

Since I like prog rock I wanna mention Styx. They really do not get enough credit but they are pretty awesome. I saw them live recently - really pro musicians and put on a fantastic show.

Warning super cheesy video that recently has been viral due to Jimmy Fallon's unabashed love of Styx (and occasional invoking Mr Roboto)

Thank you again and I look forward to hearing more of what your friends suggest and your music.

Its a pleasure thank you for your thoughtful comments!

Yeah mate as I said I really loved the vocals - and heavy is good! Looking forward to keeping listening to Rush - will let you know how I get on :)

Yeah I know the clip your meaning from Live Aid - sends shivers down your spine right - Freddie has the best voice!

Thansk for this - nother band I have heard of but never delved into - seems to be a lot of these!

Thanks @conradt !! Really appreciate the efford you putting in !!

Thank you for joining in! Love all the new music suggestions!
