African Ringneck ParrotsteemCreated with Sketch.

African Ringneck Parrot.

This beautiful parrot resides at the Maleny Botanic Gardens and shares his home with a variety of other colourful, noisy and entertaining birds; mostly from the parrot family. I was able to get inside the aviary and interact with them closely which they didn't seem to mind. In fact, they insist on it, much to my delight.

These beautiful parrots are characterized by the black ring around their necks which take approximately 18 months to develop. Although it can take up to three years. The females have a less prominent ring and is more green than black and their feathers are a lighter green than their male counterparts. They are a native of Africa and often found in small flocks of 20 – 50 birds. African Ringnecks thrive in warmer climates and search for food on the ground. They are most at home perched in trees and when alerted will make a loud call to alert their mates.

African Ringnecks and their cousins, the Indian Ringnecks are very similar in appearance, but the Indian ringnecks are a more vibrant green whereas the African Ringnecks are lime green. Also, the black ring around the African Ringneck is more prominent than on the Indian Ringneck and much thicker toward the base of the beak. The other noticeable difference is that the Indian ringnecks beaks are larger and red in colour and the African Ringnecks beak is more of a plum colour.

If the African Ringneck is handfed just after weaning, they become much more docile than the Indian Ringnecks. They enjoy being petted around the neck area but not on their bodies. African Ringnecks make wonderful pets especially when young. They are wonderful talkers but just like the human species the males are a lot more vociferous. (lol)

They begin talking between the ages of eight – twelve months. For best results, owners should talk often to their birds and when well tamed, an African Ringneck becomes extremely responsive to human voices and concentrate on a person’s mouth when they are speaking to them. It really helps to talk in an excited way as the birds respond well to this.

Their diet consists of a variety of foods such as pellets, seeds, fruits, and vegetables with their favourite being, steamed carrots, pumpkin, or corn. Protein foods such as chicken beef or cooked eggs should be kept to a minimum and thrown out if left uneaten to avoid spoilage. Owners should be aware that avocado, fruit seeds, onions, and chocolate, could result in death so it is better to be informed.

That's a pretty bird. I really like the last photo with that clear eye. You're obviously being watched!

What kind of pirate has steamed carrots or pumpkin lying around? :-)

Yes, he was was waiting for my response after asking me if I thought he was cute. (lol) I think you mean 'parrot' not 'pirate'. Right? I don't think many pirates had enough veggies in their day. Not sure about the modern ones though.

I thought the same thing abut the steamed pumpkin and carrots etc, but the info was largely about how to care for the parrots as pets. Thanks for your wonderful support @fotosdenada It is always appreciated.

Oh, I was just thinking of all those pirates in the movies and books that had pet parrots. How did they keep them around without enough fruits and veggies for the crew? You never hear of the parrot getting scurvy!

That's because the pirates were too busy teaching the parrots to say swear words. They didn't know how to say "help I'm dying"if and when they did get scurvy......Let's hope they were able to fly away to greener pastures if needed.

Gorgeous Parrot, Trudee! Love those colours! I thought I should let you know that #eaglefriday is morphing into #FeatheredFriday starting this week... that way, we don't discriminate against all the non-eagle birds! I know you have a lot of birds, so you might be interested in this new challenge. I'm taking your parrot home with me now, thank you for sharing him! :)

Great! I'm rapt, I always thought you would be the best to organize a bird challenge. I can't wait to support it.

Rapt as in raptor? Cool :)

Haha......Nice one Keith Yes, I did mean Raptors and 'all things with wings.' Very poetic don't you think?

You're very welcome @dpet It is a pleasure.

Howdy trudeehunter! Hey you can't use big words like vociferous! You got rednecks out here in your followers and that trips us up! lol. I assume that means louder? Hey what a gorgeous bird that is, my gosh....did it talk to you?

Well for a great story teller like yourself you just may be glad you heard the word 'Vociferous' my friend. As well as loud, it also means outspoken, forthright, frank, candid, enthusiastic and vigorous.

I don't remember if this bird talked to me but there were a few in that big aviary that knew how to hold a conversation.......well, perhaps I should say 'small talk,' although most have plenty of volume. They are a lot of fun.

ha! Those birds are a trip aren't they? They specialize in small talk like most men. They're so loud too, or can be. And act like spoiled little brats! Or some do. Plus they live to be about 60 years old don't they? lol. And vociferous like the typical Australian!

Haha.......You're a quick learner @janton and you've obviously heard a thing or two about Australians I see. (lol)

oh is that true? lol.. I've actually always heard that they are very laid back and easy going.

Oh yes........laid back, easy going and often very vociferous! A real interesting mix @janton and many who'd give you the shirt off their back without a second thought. We have a reputation for lending a helping hand and looking out for one another during or after the regular natural disasters such as floods, droughts and fires this land sees more than enough of.

Howdy today trudeehunter! well I just need to spend some time there. I'd probably never leave once I got there, I'd be an illegal immigrant! But you do seem to have alot of natural disasters like droughts, fires and floods. Thank God you're a strong country!
