My Thought's on Voice - Will it be a Major Competitor for Steem Anytime Soon?

Can I admit something? I was super excited to check out this big project that Block One has been working on for the last year to see what kind of blockchain based social media dapp they would come up with. Curious to see how it would be set up and accomplished. Would it be similar to Steem... totally different? Could we learn from them?

All the hype was there. Everyone has been waiting for a year. A company with practically unlimited funding and 100 developers working for an entire year... I couldn't even imagine what kick-ass product that kind of focus would produce.

I grabbed my popcorn and snuggled into the couch to watch the announcement. The energy in the crowd looked amazing and the stage itself looked more like an Apple keynote presentation than a blockchain product. Very impressive.

Then?

They basically just announced the name and a one-page website. They didn't even have a product yet. I signed up for the beta test, and it took a week for me to get a generic response basically saying to "stay tuned".

I think Voice has a lot of potential, and the graphics/branding are SUPER good - but really? Why have a massive announcement, just to make an announcement of something else coming up? Why not wait until there was at least a beta version that people could begin testing and signing up for right there?

There was also no launch date or roadmap given that I saw.

So what does this mean for Steem? Yes, they may be a big competitor to our platform at some point - but not today. Don't get me wrong, I think competition is good for any market place and I'm totally planning to check it out - but couldn't believe how lackluster the announcement was.

What are your thoughts on the announcement?

I see a lot of people bashing voice... in my opinion, voice will be huge as block.one said they will back it up with hundreds of millions dollars in marketing.

I also see voice as different than steemit currently. More people want a mobile social media blockchain product like Instagram/twitter and they are positioning themselves perfectly.

I will be using both 🤑

I second this ^^

its actually great when you see larger projects go up against the bigger players. lets hope it does gain the mass adoption ...

Agreed! Mass adoption for Voice would mean greater exposure for blockchain in general and blockchain based social media dapps specifically. The launch last week definitely left something to be desired - but with their budget and large team I have a lot of hope that they'll pull something great off.

Totally agree that it has the potential to be huge. Clear value proposition, good branding, and a marketing budget to get the word out.

I just don’t get how with such a massive effort and so much money spent over the last year that they were able to botch the launch announcement so bad. 😆

It does seem like they are going after shorter form, quick social media content like Facebook, insta and Twitter - which is where a lot of the daily usage is anyway. Smart of them.

Elephant in the room: they know that if they build a superior product all the early adopters will be Steemians regardless. Block One's announcement didn't exactly make waves through mainstream media. The way I look at it, the best way to get a head start on Voice is, as always, going to be more efficient grinding building one's platform here. I've signed up for Narrative, ONO, yadda yadda yadda (not actually a crypto social media platform but a plausible name) ... until one of them is a functional product with an ecosystem and infrastructure, I'm firmly planted here. Doesn't seem coincidental that all this emergent competition is happening as SMTs, gaming, video and audio aps all hit their stride on steem.

Competition is good!

bahahah!!! This is amazing and hilarious @meesterboom. 😂

I'm a big believer in looking at culture when judging an investment.
Look at Dogecoin. It doesn't do much AND It started as a joke! It's currently #29 on Coinmarketcap!!
It's strength is in it's culture. People just love doge and have their own 'feel' going.
I see the same in Steemit. The PEOPLE are just different. I believe in that! You can hire as many programmers as you like, have a dream development team and do a bunch of marketing, but you will never touch a group that is there because of a feeling.
I think it's healthy to have, and welcome, competition. But my money (and loyalty) is still with Steemit.

This is my favorite comment on this thread yet! Such a great perspective. You are right... it's hard to put a dollar value on the strong sense of community we have here on Steem. (although that actually translates to the dollar value going up at some point soon. 😂)

yes, a number of things could've been better. The upgrade to 1.8 has to happen before voice beta can be used. I agree with your view that having competition will be a healthy thing for the space.

Thanks for the comment! I think in general - having a blockchain based dapp will only increase awareness of cyrptocurrency and help the entire space as a whole. :)

I am with you with being underwhelmed, It was a bit sad to see them using the familiar format in presentation as Apple and all the other tech companies. I really would have preferred that they did something a bit different and exciting to show that blockchain was a new direction for the internet.
As for vioce I think it is was just one small part of the announcement. For me the big thing was the concept of having one user one account. I know KYC is not popular but for blockchain social media to become better than what already exists then some sort of ID will be necessary or voice will unfortunately travel the same road that Steem is having trouble travelling. This of course bring together many different aspects and not just the programming of a nice frontend.
Time will tell if they can pull it off but I do agree that I expected more concrete plans than what we got.
Still, I am quietly optimistic for it's future and of course for Steem by association.

Interesting point on the presentation itself! I kind of liked that it was similar to an Apple presentation becuase I think that shows how blockchain companies can compete with mainstream ones. You make a great point about doing something surprisingly to match how innovative the products are.

To your point on one user, one account - YES! If they can pull that off it will change everything. Not just in social media - but in every aspect of user data. I'm rooting for them too.

They definetely need you for improving their onboarding. :D

Waiting days for a confirmation for a non existing beta is Kind of lame. Good for the price of steem i think.

I would be Happy if @dan at least makes some posts here and not on Twitter.

Yeah I definitely think they could have improved the onboarding experience and given better next step actions/stayed in closer contact with the people who watched or attended the keynote. In other words - done a better job of capturing and retaining the attention they already had.

I recieved an email response from them recently dont know when the roll out is. This is going to be epic, block one is going to hit a homerun!!!1559089889680.gif

Fingers crossed!! Mass adoption for Voice would mean greater awareness of crypto in the main stream and better exposure for Steem by association.

Hey @coruscate , I'm a distributor of Coffee Luwak. I'm interested in your Cryptos and Coffee idea. Hope to learn more from you. 😄😆

Thanks! I'm planning to do an unboxing video when I get the bag of coffee from Hodl Fuel. :)

Cool. Is Hodl Fuel a coffee and cryptos kind of firm too?
