Voice - Steemit Killer It Ain't

in #eos5 years ago

Much hyped, long-awaited #B1June update... watch it for yourself:

Here's what I've got from it:

Prove that you're you (multiple times). Just show up and you'll get Voice Tokens. You can't buy it (so you can't sell it either). Use the tokens to voice your opinion.

Oh boy... social media with no anonymity is just what the people are looking for. Both the regular and the crypto people. Yeah, right.

I think I remember just how popular this idea is with normal people. Does anyone remember that Real Name Google+ debacle?

Here's how it ended: Google Plus Finally Gives Up on Its Ineffective, Dangerous Real-Name Policy

I know it's not the same thing, but it's equally dangerous.

What about the crypto crew? Do they like earning the tokens they can't sell? I don't think so.

But, people being people - creative and smart - will create a market for it. Many of you are aware of the post2mine crews that have a ton of members. Now, if they show up on Voice and earn enough tokens, even if they can't sell the tokens they can sell their influence.

You won't be paying the bidbots (like here), you'll go to a private discord server or a telegram group, send some STEEM/EOS/BTC/ETH... and get 100+ real people voicing your post there.

Perhaps, I'm missing something, but Voice as it is described in that video is both dangerous and useless at the same time.

It solves no problem that real or crypto people care about. I don't see this thing killing Steemit.

Sort:

This was always on the horizon as the Steemit killer for a few years now. I am clued up on blockchain stuff and found EOS confusing and difficult to get information on. I think all of the hype was purely due to it being a Dan Larimer project.

Not worried about the Voice killing Steemit now, I think Steemit has critical mass and the apps have added a new dimension to the platform.

I do think the threat of EOS had been subduing the Steem price, if that is the case I predict a nice price rise in Steem over the coming weeks and months. It probably will be worth keeping an eye on the Voice but in my opnion the start isn't great.

Was totally underwhelmed by the Block One reveal, it (Voice) will get users but I can see a very slow growth there personally. Happy with Steemit nothing draws me to the Voice.

Same here.

That presentation has been a total letdown. Especially since I've watched a ton of youtube videos from the fanboys salivating about Apple first, then Facebook,...

good luck with mass adoption though.
Typical Voice user (as I see it) probably be like

  • crystal with IRS
  • familiar with crypto (hello,IRS)
  • trustful with 3d-parties partners of B1
  • living in right place ('cause some restrictions from US government may occur no-matter-how)
... and this list will be updated I think

So... catfishing is OK on Steemit, but not on Voice? What changed @dantheman?

After following all the hype in the EOS community about what is happening in June, I'm kind of underwhelmed.

B1 building a social media platform was an open secret for quite a while now, so was that they are trying to tackle identity issues. While their approach seems to solve some issues Steem is having, I have the feeling that it is going to introduce a whole lot of new ones. Apart from the obvious (KYC), it seems to me like B1 is creating the ultimate echo chamber where the loud voices will only get louder (since they can use the tokens to amplify their voices). I'm not sure how much B1 thought about this issue, especially since it does not matter if those loud voices are bots or real humans.

It is also unclear to me, if there is any benefit in the voice tokens apart from being used on Voice. Since it looks like you can't sell them, it doesn't seem so. Which is a pity, since I agree with you that this is one of the killer features of blockchain based social media (and the reason why most of us are here on Steem). I also have to agree that vote-buying will move to other places.

To me it seems like Voice has only one purpose: get as many people as possible into EOS, as Dan briefly mentions towards the end of his presentation

Yeah, watching the fanboys salivating for months about it and then seeing that presentation is a major letdown.

I just don't see any upside to jump through all the hoops and get the profile there. If they partner with the major exchanges and have them accept your voice profile in place of the kyc, that would be different, but as it stands I have no desire to voice my opinion on that platform.

Yes, I also found that "announcement that we are going to make an announcement" rather strange, it reminded me a lot of Justin Sun on Twitter.

In general I like the idea of having a social media platform on EOS, that could compete with Steem or even with Facebook, but so far it doesn't seem like this is going to happen. Let's see what the future brings, maybe one day it will, there is a lot of untapped potential.

Them talking about facebook at this point is just arrogance, they've got to catch up to steemit first.

I mean, talking about facebook when you don't have a working web site...

That's true, they have no working website but 4 billion dollars from the ICO.
That makes you think big.

Won't be using Voice for sure. I thought Facebook's requirements were onerous but this is ridiculous.

Voice putting Facebook to shame here :)

It's hard to kill something that's already dead.
