Something's cooking

There wasn’t much cooking done in our house when we were kids. Alcoholics don’t tend to have much of an appetite. These were the days before frozen foods and McDonald's, so us kids delighted in living on jam sandwiches and milk.

At school in Home Economics class, we learned how to bake bread…….for three whole years. When I presented the result of my baking endeavours to my father, he made a hole in it, put some twine through the hole, tied it around the dog’s neck and threw him in the paddling pool in the back yard. We didn’t live near a river, but I think he made his point perfectly.

When I bought my own house, I got a top of the range kitchen fitted. It was like a mausoleum. There wasn’t a mark on it when I sold the place four years later.

More recently, with some understanding of nutrition, I decided to try my hand at a few recipes from the internet, and one Christmas created seven different dishes for dinner, all of which tasted like cardboard. My partner blindfolded me and challenged me to tell them apart by taste alone and just like that, my cooking days were over.

These days we eat only raw food in our house. It’s best that way.

It is important for parents to teach their children (both boys & girls) to cook while growing up so they can always feed themselves.
Raw vegetables are good but I wouldn’t want to eat raw meat.

Eeeeek, I didn't even think of meat. I've been a veggie for almost 40 years.
As to parents teaching kids to cook, the problem is a lot of them don't know how.
I don't know what it's like where you are, but in Dublin, we have Just Eat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo couriers whizzing around in their hundreds. People here seem to live on restaurant food and it's likely the same everywhere. No wonder every second person is obese.

I can only take restaurant food so much then I have to start putting together meals. Too much salt and sugar in restaurant food that’s causing health problems.

There’s plenty of restaurants but I live in the countryside in Canada, no delivery this far from town. People seem to eat at home mainly here on P.E.I.

Even simply meals like a roast of beef or chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and some cooked or raw veggies are good.

You're so right. On the odd occasion I do eat out I find myself drinking a gallon of water when I get home. I suppose restaurants buy the cheapest ingredients and make them tasty with plenty of salt.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!
sounds like my childhood home, the booze and all, but somehow I went into food as a livelihood, and now it's very important to me. Although I am sick to death of cooking (and shopping and dishes and cleaning up), I still spend hours doing it. I have a slap dash kitchen though.
Very funny that your top o the line kitchen never got used.

I'm here to deliver the Tuesday prompt so please write us another!

I recommend a raw food diet;) Much less shopping and cleaning up, and absolutely no cooking at all!
Edit: Oh, I almost forgot my manners....thanks for the delivery

Alcoholics don’t tend to have much of an appetite.

Phew, that's a relief... I have a pretty good appetite :))

Well that makes you very close to a teetotaler I'm sure!

Hopefully that cardboard at least retained its nutrients :)

Hahaha, probably not considering my cooking method is to boil everything at 500 degrees so I know it's cooked through.

Oh dear....I wish this was fiction, but I guess it isn't. I'm so sorry you never got the hang of cooking! But I guess we can't all do everything; I don't paint very well at all, and I'm talking about walls, not portraits. But I love to cook. Wish I could have had your lovely kitchen.

I think to be a good cook you have to like food. In the last 10 years or so I've resorted to juicing and eating raw. It keeps me healthy and reduces the amount I have to consume.

I'm glad you found that works for you!

lol! It's the most merciful way to eat? that's a little hard to believe deirdyweidy but it sure is fun and funny! Classic image too, love that. I mean I miss your gifted hand drawn ones but that's clever.

Every word of it is true m'dear, sure you know I wouldn't tell you a fib;)

Well that is true. lol. Okay then, you are much healthier for not cooking I think, most of us should cook less but when it comes to desserts it's pretty hard to not cook!

@deirdyweirdy Thank you for not using bidbots on this post and also using the #nobidbot tag!

Hey partner! Hope all is well and not getting creeped out by any bugs. LOL!
I am tops today and I will see ya in Freewrite Land. : )

I think our minds have melded! These last few weeks we keep writing to each other at the same moment.

I would love to be in your mind. : )

Thankfully, raw food is much better for you.

😄😇😄
