Free Write Saturday prompt Pig's ear

This is my post for #freewrite Saturday prompt option by @mariannewest

We got Bill when he was just a baby, there was two of them Sally and Bill. I remember it was very a cold night, I know you are thinking how cold can it be in Florida, but it was cold and all Bill and Sally had to stay warm in was a 55-gallon metal barrel turned on its side. The next morning Sally was dead. I have always thought it was the cold and Bill would not let her in the barrel. Maybe a snake bit her or something like that, I will never know.

I lived at a campground and Bill would get loose and scare the campers, then they would see me, a skinny little 8-year-old girl, go up to the 300-pound hog and grab the pigs ear and lead him back to his pen. I can not tell you how many times he got loose. We had him over 10 years.

My Dad had a bar at the campground, and he had block ice to keep the beer cold. He would have me or one of my siblings take an icepick and chop the ice up. Sometimes we would miss and hit a can of beer, Bill loved beer and we did not tell Dad that we hit a can, or two or three. One time we got Bill drunk, it was funny watching him stagger around his pen, we were kids, now I would not do something like that but I cannot change the past.

This is a picture of me and Dad in his bar

When the state took the land and we had to move, Dad sold Bill, by this time he was 600 pounds with tusks about 5 inches and still my pet. I cried because we could not take him with us. My Dad had no idea where we were going to move to. We traveled for 3 months with him looking at land. He said he will know where we will live when he finds it. To this day I still miss Bill.

Wonderful story @myjob...!!!
We had pigs growing up and always enjoyed choosing names for them. We tried not to get to attached knowing their fates would be on our plates. Was always sad to see them go. They really do have quite the personalities. We let them roam around free and often follow us like dogs.

@annephilbrick My Dad always butchered the pigs we had but this one, maybe because Bill got to big or because he was attached to him, too. I will never know. I am not sure just how many years we had him, but I do remember the guy who bought him saying he weighed Bill and he was 600 pounds. not sure what the guy did with him. In my mind, he lived the rest of his life on a farm. He was just a big baby.

I found a picture of Bill, sorry it is not very clear

Oh! I miss my very first dog more than all the others. My mother had her put to sleep while we were in school without even telling us! I was so mad at her. She must have had her reasons, like we wouldn't have let her do it (the dog had bitten someone), but it was not right that I couldn't even say goodbye. I remember being the most angry about that.

@owasco I agree with you, she should have let you say good-bye, I am so sorry. My first dog was a beagle, we had her many years and I was the one who found her when she passed, I still remember it, me telling dad Mitzy won't wake up. I was somewhere between 5 and 8 years.
